No. 18 Women’s Swim and Dive defeats NAU, Sun Devils win 16 events at day one of SMU Classic

(Flagstaff, AZ)  No. 18 Sun Devil Women’s Swim and Dive made its first trip to Flagstaff since 2012 and defeated the Lumberjacks 201-99 Friday afternoon from Wall Aquatic Center.

During the women’s dual in Flagstaff, 18 Sun Devil swimmers and divers began competition at the SMU Classic from Dallas, winning 16 events. Day two will begin tomorrow at 8 a.m. with a stream available on SMU’s website. Day one results can be accessed here.

Freshman Saeren Brett earned a zone cut in women’s 3m diving, winning the event in 285.53 and placed runner-up in 1m diving in 259.35. Full results from the meet against NAU can be found here. The women’s team set eight pool records against the Lumberjacks and ASU added three pool records from Dallas.

Facing the Lumberjacks, the Sun Devils placed first and second in the 200 medley relay to open the afternoon, winning in 1:39.19 (Sotomayor, Tran-Hansen, Biffart, Chalupsky). Senior Lia Csulak won the 1000 free in 10:23.18.

In the 200 free, freshman Haddie Vohs touched the wall in 1:50.40, followed by Sonia Vaishnaniin 1:51.40. Sophomore Alexia Sotomayor was first in the 100 back in 54.31, then sophomore June Selin Tran-Hansen secured first in the 100 breast (1:00.89) and the 200 breast (2:16.48). Freshman Monica Leydar won the 200 fly in 2:01.15 and freshman Ellie Chalupsky was the 50 free in 22.67 and the 100 free in 49.39.

Sotomayor won her second individual race of the day, winning by nearly three seconds in the 200 back in 2:00.55. Csulak won the 500 free in 5:03.88 while junior Ariel Beltran was second in the 100 fly (54.55).

Freshman Maya Hetland touched the wall first in the 400 IM in 4:27.23, as the team ended the meet with a win in the 400 free relay in 3:22.10 by Shane Golland, Cali Watts, Sotomayor and Chalupsky.

SMU Classic Recap:

The Sun Devils opened the SMU classic with a pair of relay wins in the 400 medley relay, the quartet of Miriam Sheehan, Lucie Vasquez, Julia Ullmann and Albane Cachot touched first in 3:30.25. Then, on the men’s side, Nathan Muratory, Oliver Munn, Ilya Kharun and Quin Seiderplaced first by nearly six seconds in 3:01.93.

Arizona State won 16 events on Friday, featuring Grace Lindberg (4:11.27) and JT Ewing (3:45.21) winning the 400 IM. Freshman Alyssa Albertyn swam a 1:44.95 in the 200 free, placing first. While junior Quin Seider was first in the 200 free in 1:33.26.

In the 50 free, ASU got wins by Cachot who set a personal best (21.70) for first, and Kharun winning in 18.72. In the 100 fly, Ullmann (52.15) and Kharun each won the 100 fly, with Kharun touching the wall in 44.39.

In the 100 back, Sheehan set a personal best in the 100 back in 51.79, which is the second-fastest in school history. Freshman Nathan Muratory managed to touch the wall in 46.12. In the 100 breast, sophomore Lucie Vasquez won in 1:00.35 and freshman Oliver Munn hit the wall in 52.22.

Ending off the night, the Sun Devils won the 800 free relay, sweeping all 16 swimming events on Friday. ASU will return to the pool tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. MST for the final session from Dallas.
