Aztecs Volleyball Falls in 5th-Set Tiebreaker to Lee College

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College volleyball team (2-4) closed out play in the Arizona Western College Tournament on Friday in Yuma.

The No. 13 ranked Aztecs took a 2-1 advantage in the match but fell to the Rebels in the tiebreaker 25-20, 17-25, 24-26, 25-15, 16-14. The Aztecs finished 1-1 at the AWC Tournament.

The Aztecs trailed 14-12 in the third set but responded with four straight points to take a 16-14 lead. They led by as much as four points at 20-16 but the Rebels tied it up at 23-23. With the score tied at 24-24, the Aztecs secured the final two points of the set; which included sophomore Kaylee Moseley’s (Marana HS) game-winning kill.

After dropping the fourth set, the Aztecs took a 12-9 lead in the tie-breaking fifth set after sophomore Andrea Vigil-German’s (Ironwood Ridge HS) kill but the Rebels tied it at 12-12forcing Pima to call timeout. Sophomore Karla Soto (Nogales HS) put the Aztecs ahead 13-12 with her kill but it was the last lead Pima would have. Tied at 14-14, Lee College scored the final two points to close out the match.

Freshman Lina Kassimatis finished the match with nine kills and two blocks while sophomore Jessica Bright-Schade (Safford HS) had eight kills and three aces. Sophomore Aydalis Felix (Rincon HS) closed it out with 18 digs and one ace. Soto posted 21 assists, eight digs and three aces and fellow sophomore Isabella Jacome finished with 17 assists and three aces.

The Aztecs continue non-conference play on Saturday, September 4 as they play Mott Community College. The match will be held at Scottsdale Community College and begins at 2:00 p.m.
