Clarissa Figueroa has four hits, three RBIs and three runs as Softball upsets No. 11 Phoenix College

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (32-5, 24-4 in ACCAC) earned a big ACCAC conference doubleheader sweep on Tuesday against Phoenix College (28-6, 22-6) at the West Campus Aztec Field.

The No. 12 ranked Aztecs upset the No. 11 Bears as both teams are ranked in the NJCAA Division II poll. Sophomore Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View HS) closed out the day going 4-for-6 with three RBIs, three runs scored, a home run and two doubles. Freshman Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside HS) finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs while sophomore Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside HS) went 3-for-6 with an RBI and a run. Sophomore Julissa Lopez (Tucson Magnet HS) was 2-for-6 with an RBI and two runs and freshman Angelina Dehler (Empire HS) closed it out going 1-for-3 with two RBIs, a run and three walks.

Freshman Adriana Machado (Canyon del Oro HS) got the win in her start while sophomore Belen Camacho (Pueblo HS) got the win in relief.

Game 1: (12) Pima Aztecs 7, (11) Phoenix College Bears) 3

The Aztecs rallied and broke open a 3-3 tie with four runs in the 5th inning as Camacho closed out the game.

The Aztecs trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the 3rd inning. Freshman Izabel Rodriguez (Sahuarita HS) reached base on a fielder’s choice. Figueroa stepped up and hit a two-run homer to right field to cut the deficit to one run. Lopez followed with a home run of her own to right field to tie the game at 3-3.

The Aztecs took the lead for good in the 5th inning. They loaded the bases with no outs. Figueroa put the Aztecs ahead with an RBI single that scored Lopez-Bedoy. Freshman Kayla Hendrix (Canyon del Oro HS) scored on an error to make it 5-3. Dehler drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Rodriguez and Ponce followed with an RBI single to plate Figueroa to cap off the four-run inning.

Figueroa finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Lopez went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run while Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with two runs. Lopez-Bedoy finished 2-for-3 with a run and Ponce was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Machado loaded the bases in the 7th inning, but Camacho came in and struck out the side on 11 pitches (10 for strikes). Machado got the win as she pitched six innings, giving up three runs (three earned) on 13 hits. Camacho threw one inning and had three strikeouts.

Game 2: (12) Pima Aztecs 3, (11) Phoenix College Bears 1

The Aztecs broke another tie after scoring two runs in the 6th inning to help seal the sweep.
With the game tied at 1-1, the Aztecs got back-to-back hits from Figueroa and Lopez with one out in the 6th. Sophomore Jiselle Nunez (Tucson Magnet HS) drew a walk to load the bases. Dehler produced another bases loaded walk to score Figueroa. Ponce drove an RBI single to center field to score Lopez.

The Bears left a runner stranded as Camacho got a pop up, a strikeout and a flyout to end the game.

Dehler scored in the 2nd inning and the Bears tied the game in the 4th inning.
Figueroa finished 2-for-2 with a run. Ponce went 1-for-2 with an RBI while Lopez-Bedoy was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Lopez closed it out, going 1-for-3 with a run and Dehler was 0-for-1 with an RBI, a run and two walks.

Camacho got the win as she pitched three and two-third innings with three hits, two strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Sariah Ferrentino (Sabino HS) started the game and pitched three and one-third innings, giving up one run (one earned) on two hits with one strikeout and four walks.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Field next Tuesday, April 7 for an ACCAC conference doubleheader against Mesa Community College at the West Campus Aztec Field. First game will start at 12:00 p.m.
