Cedric Cade defends Region title in Decathlon as Men’s Track & Field opens postseason

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s track & field team opened the Region I postseason on Monday and Tuesday as it competed at the Region I Multi’s and 10K Championships at Mesa Community College.

The Aztecs scored 35 team points that go towards next week’s Region I Championships.

Sophomore Cedric Cade became a two-time Region I Champion in the Decathlon as he finished with 6324 points earning 10 team points.
Cade took first place in five of the 10 events; Long Jump (7.20 meters), High Jump (2.05 meters), Discus (34.61 meters), Pole Vault (4.51 meters) and Javelin (46.16 meters). He claimed second place in the Shot Put (10.59 meters) and the 110-meter hurdles (16.85).

Freshman Andrew Schmier (Red Mountain HS) took second place in the Decathlon and earned eight team points with a total of 5940 points. He took first place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.73 and had four 2ndplace finishes.

The Aztecs secured 17 points in the 10,000-meter race. Freshman Andrew Smith (Tanque Verde HS) crossed the finish line in second place (eight points) with a time of 32:30.28 while sophomore Jackson Koontz (Salpointe Catholic HS) finished third (six points) at 32:32.42. Freshman Jose Hernandez (Rio Rico HS) claimed sixth place (three points) with a time of 32:59.15.

The Aztecs will compete at the Region I Championships on Tuesday, April 28 and Thursday, April 30 at Mesa Community College.
