(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College volleyball team (3-7) stepped away from ACCAC conference play on Saturday for a non-conference match against Park University VR at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.
- The Aztecs took a 2-0 lead in the match and finished off the Buccaneers in four sets winning 25-20, 25-21, 15-25, 25-19.
- The Aztecs trailed for the first part of the opening set. Down 13-10, they scored four straight points, capped off by sophomore Maggie McReynolds’ (Mountain View HS) kill to give them their first lead at 14-13. Pima created some breathing room after McReynolds’ ace made it 21-17. The Aztecs scored the final three points to take a 1-0 lead.
- The second set featured nine ties as the Aztecs were forced to rally. The Buccaneers took their biggest lead at 19-15 but the Aztecs came back scoring seven straight points capping off the run with kills from sophomore Julia Baird and freshman Alexia Hutchens (Salpointe Catholic HS) as Pima took a 22-19 lead. The Aztecs scored three of the final five points to take a 2-0 lead.
- The Buccaneers held a lead for much of the third set, The Aztecs trailed 10-9 but Park University scored seven of the next nine points to take a 17-11 lead. The Aztecs fell behind by double digits late in the set.
- The Aztecs and the Buccaneers played a tight fourth set as there were 10 ties. With the score even at 18-18, the Aztecs scored seven of the last eight points to win it. Freshman Alex Jacome (Canyon del Oro HS) had an ace to set up match-point and Hutchens put the match away with her kill.
- McReynolds finished with nine kills, eight digs and three aces while Jacome closed it out with 28 assists and five aces.
- Baird and Hutchens each had eight kills. Baird added three blocks while Hutchens finished with two blocks.
The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Friday when they host Scottsdale Community College in ACCAC conference action. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m
