Led by Quin, No. 10 Water Polo Defeats No. 14 Indiana 10-9

(Tempe, AZ)  On a cloudless Saturday, No. 10 Sun Devil Water Polo prevailed against the No. 14 Hoosiers, 10-9. Earning their 22nd win of the year and improving to 2-3 in MPSF play this season in a back and fourth affair. The Sun Devils will cap off their regular season next weekend in its senior celebration against USC set to start at 1 p.m. AZT.

Millie Quin led the way four goals, making it the fourth time this season she’s reached the four-goal mark, giving her 68 goals on the year. She also had an assists on the day for four points. Lara Kiss led the way with five-points and was all over the pool, totaling two goals, three assists, four steals and two field-blocks on the day.

Sanne Keijzer tallied 11 saves for the game, marking the fifth time this season that she’s tallied double-digit saves in a game and the first time it’s happened in back-to-back games.

Lastly, the Sun Devils 22 wins mark the second most wins in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Indiana managed to strike in the first 90 seconds to take an early 1-0 lead after an ASU missed penalty shot. After four minutes, Ashley Ferguson sneaked a shot past the Hoosier goalie to tie the game at one.
  • Then a minute later, Shorter-Robinson utilized a beautiful back-hand to give ASU a 2-1 lead. The Hoosiers tied the game at two before the end of the first quarter.
  • At the 5:32 mark, Millie Quin netted her first goal of the game to give the Sun Devils a 3-2 lead. Quin added her second goal of the quarter with a backhand, giving ASU a 4-2 lead, but the Hoosiers responded with another 6-on-5 goal. The Sun Devils would carry a 4-3 lead into the break
  • Returning from halftime, Indiana tied the game up at the 6:26 mark at four. After a timeout and stopping Indiana on a man-advantage, Lara Kiss striped a ball past the Hoosier goalkeeper to give ASU a 5-4 lead with 3:46 to play. Indiana would tie the game at five on the next possession.
  • After Petovary drew an exclusion, she received a pass from Lara Kiss and then buried her first goal of the game with 1:15 to play, giving the Sun Devils a 6-5 lead. The Hoosiers would respond with a breakaway goal with under a minute left to tie, but Millie Quin’s goal with seven seconds left gave ASU a 7-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Both sides traded goals in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, where Indiana would tie the game at eight with under six minutes to play. Coming out of an ASU timeout, the Sun Devils managed straight goals to take a 10-8 lead, scored by Quin and Alba Olivé Martí. Indiana scored once more with 1 minute in the game to inch within one,
