Pima Baseball coach Ken Jacome earns 200th win as Aztecs sweep Glendale CC

(Glendale, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (26-8, 12-6 in ACCAC) hit the road for an ACCAC conference matchup on Tuesday at Glendale Community College (26-9, 9-9).
The No. 18 ranked Aztecs swept the doubleheader over the Gauchos and in the process gave head coach Ken Jacome his 200th career win at Pima after the second game victory.

“I’m very grateful for all the players and coaches who helped make that happen,” coach Ken Jacome said. “The wins were earned by lots of fantastic players who took a chance on Pima College. I’m thankful for each and every individual that helped play a part.”
Sophomore Elijah Reeves (Marana HS) finished the day going 5 for 9 with an RBI, three runs scored and two steals. Freshman Collin Senior (Horizon HS) went 4 for 8 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Sophomore Austin Madsen (Canyon del Oro HS) was 3 for 8 with two RBIs and two runs. Sophomore Diego Alvarez (Sahuarita HS) and freshman Nate Gray (Queen Creek HS) combined to pitched 13 and one-third innings, giving up one run (none earned) on seven hits with eight strikeouts and three walks.

Game 1: (18) Pima Aztecs 5, Glendale Gauchos 1

W – Alvarez (4-0). 2B: Madsen, Kragel, Arias. SB: Reeves.

The Aztecs took the early lead with four runs over the first three innings as they held off a 9th inning rally.

Senior and sophomore Dom Felix (Canyon del Oro HS) drew bases loaded walks to score Reeves and sophomore Nick Arias (Tucson Magnet HS) respectively in the 1st inning to put Pima up 2-0.
Reeves was hit by a pitch and later scored on an error in the 2nd inning. Senior hit an RBI single to drive in sophomore Brant Kragel, who led off the inning with a double as Pima went up 4-0.

Reeves added an RBI single in the 6th inning as he finished the game at 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Senior went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a walk while Arias was 2 for 4 with a run. Kragel and Madsen each scored a run.

Alvarez picked up the win on the mound as he pitched six and one-third innings, giving up one run (none earned) on three hits with four strikeouts on 76 pitches.

Game 2: (18) Pima Aztecs 9, Glendale Gauchos 0

W – Gray (2-0). 2B: Hennesy, Senior. 3B: Madsen, Cummings. SB: Reeves.

The Aztecs took control in the late innings as eight of their runs came in the final three innings.
Gray threw a gem as he pitched seven shutout innings, giving up four hits with four strikeouts and three walks on 82 pitches to gain the win.
The Aztecs went up 1-0 in the 4th inning after freshman Chase Cummings knocked in Senior with his RBI triple.
Sophomore Jonte Hennesy (Horizon HS) and Madsen had back-to-back RBI hits in the 7thinning while Arias hit a sacrifice-fly to cap off the inning. Pima led 4-0.
Hennesy hit a sacrifice-fly in the 8th inning and Madsen followed with an RBI triple to make it 6-0.
The Aztecs tacked on three more runs in the 9th inning. Sophomore David Shackelford singled and Senior hit an RBI double.
Reeves went 3 for 4 with a run scored while Senior finished 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Cummings and Hennesy each were 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Madsen closed out the game going 2 for 5 with two RBIs and a run.

The Aztecs are back at the West Campus Aztec Field on Saturday when they host GateWay Community College for an ACCAC conference doubleheader. First pitch is at noon.
