Aztecs Baseball falls in doubleheader at #6 ranked Central Arizona College

(Coolidge, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (22-8, 10-6 in ACCAC) traveled to Central Arizona College (26-6, 14-2) on Saturday for an ACCAC doubleheader between two NJCAA Division I nationally ranked teams.

The No. 15 ranked Aztecs dropped both games to the No. 6 ranked Vaqueros. The Aztecs finished the day with two runs and six hits. The Aztecs stranded 13 runners on both for the day.

Game 1: (6) Central Arizona College Vaqueros 4, (15) Pima Aztecs 0

The Aztecs managed just one hit for the game as the Vaqueros took an early lead with one run in each the 1st and 2ndinnings and two runs in the 4th.

Sophomore Brant Kragel finished the game 1 for 2 with a walk. Fellow sophomores Caleb Herd (Cienega HS) and Elijah Reeves (Marana HS) also each had a walk. The Aztecs left three runners on base.

Sophomore J.T. Drake took the loss as he pitched all six innings, giving up four runs (one earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts on 87 pitches.

Game 2: (6) Central Arizona College Vaqueros 6, (15) Pima CC Aztecs 2

The Aztecs rallied to cut into Central’s lead but the Vaqueros scored three unanswered runs to complete the sweep.

Down 3-0, the Aztecs drew five walks in the 3rd inning. Reeves and sophomore Nick Arias (Tucson Magnet HS) each walked to begin the inning. Kragel loaded the bases with his walk. Freshman Collin Senior’s (Horizon HS) walk put the Aztecs on the board as he scored Reeves. Sophomore Jontae Hennesy (Horizon HS) followed with his walk to plate Arias as Pima trailed 3-2.

The Vaqueros scored two runs in the 5th inning and added one more run in the 7th.

Reeves finished the game 1 for 2 with a run scored and two walks. Senior and Hennesy each finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a walk. Arias was 1 for 3 with a run and two walks.

Freshman Maclain Roberts took the loss as he started the game and pitched one and two-third innings, giving up three runs (three earned) on one hit with one strikeout and five walks.

The Aztecs will step away from ACCAC conference play as they host Langley Blaze (BC) on Monday for a doubleheader at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field. First game starts at noon.
