Balanced Scoring Attack for #7 Water Polo Leads to 4-0 Weekend

(Tempe, AZ)  On super Sunday and closing out the ASU Invitational, No. 7 Sun Devil Water Polo (11-1) outpaced the Ottawa-Arizona Spirit (0-7), 23-1 at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center led by four goals from Luca Petovary, and hat tricks from Sophie Shorter-Robinsonand Gabby Gaetano. The win puts Arizona State at 11-1 heading into their first MPSF conference matchup against No. 1 UCLA next weekend at 1:00 p.m. AZT.


The Sun Devils scored 10 unanswered goals to start the game featuring 12 different Sun Devils scoring a goal in the victory. Luca Petovary led the team with four goals in the win, accounting for 20 goals over the weekend. Sophie Shorter-Robinson netted a hat-trick in the victory, alongside freshman Gabby Gaetano scoring her first career hat-trick. It’s the fourth time this season the Sun Devils have scored at least 20 goals in a game.

With the win, the Sun Devils stay undefeated at home with an 8-0 record, and have reached double-digits in seven out of eight contests at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Sun Devils opened the game with eight goals in the first quarter led by seven different goal scorers to take a commanding 8-0 lead after the first quarter. Emily Van Zonneveld netted two goals in the opening eight minutes.

In the second frame the Sun Devils maintained their quick start with Luca Petovaryscoring her second goal of the game 49-seconds into the period. Genesis Jaspernetted her first collegiate goal before Ottawa-AZ notched their first goal of the game with 4:42 left in the half. Kokorowski scored two goals before the end of the half to put the Sun Devils ahead 14-1.

The scoring slowed for the Sun Devils in the third quarter, needing a penalty from Molly Ostrowski to open it up. Shorter-Robinson, Petovary, and Jasper then added one to their tally to go into the fourth up 18-1.

Olive Marti and Abby Begg brought the score to 20-1 before Gaetano added two and Shorter-Robinson added another to notch both of their hat tricks in the fourth quarter, en route to a 23-1 victory.

The Sun Devils continue next week with two games on February 17 in Los Angeles. They’ll face No. 1 UCLA at 1:00 p.m. MST and Cal State Fullerton at 5:00 p.m. MST.
