Aztecs Softball splits games in final day of El Paso College Invitational

(El Paso, TX)  The Pima Community College softball team (7-6) closed out play at the El Paso CC Invitational on Saturday.

The Aztecs bounced back to earn a split as they fell to Cisco College but picked up the win over host El Paso Community College. Freshman Aubrey Marx (Cienega HS) finished the day 3 for 7 with four RBIs and two runs scored while fellow freshman Marina Price (Rincon/University HS) went 4 for 6 with two runs. Freshman Nevaeah Bracamonte earned both decisions in the circle.

The Aztecs surrendered four runs in the 2nd inning and the rally fell short in the late innings. The Aztecs committed five errors in the game.
Trailing 4-0, the Aztecs got on the board in the 5th inning when freshman Stephany Montoya (Kofa HS) hit an RBI single to drive in sophomore pinch runner Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS). Freshman Alyssa Noriega (Pueblo HS) drew a walk with two outs. The Wranglers countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-1.

The Aztecs cut into the lead even more in the 6th inning. Freshman Natalyn Rivera (Sunnyside HS) hit an RBI single to plate freshman pinch runner Mari Asher (Canyon del Oro HS). With two outs in the inning, Marx took one deep for the three-run homer scoring Price and Rivera to cut it to a one run deficit at 6-5. Cisco College scored one run in the bottom of the inning

The Aztecs stranded the tying run on first base to end the game.
Marx finished the game 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run while Price went 3 for 3 with a run scored. Rivera was 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run and Montoya went 1 for 1 with an RBI.

Bracamonte took the loss as she pitched five innings, giving up three runs (none earned) on four hits with four strikeouts.

The Aztecs scored the first seven runs of the game and bounced back with no errors on defense.

Sophomore Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) hit her first of two doubles in the 3rdinning when she drove in Marx to put Pima on the scoreboard. Zepeda singled and later scored on an error to make it 2-0.

The Aztecs tacked on five runs in the 4th inning. Sophomores Jasmine Majonica (Flowing Wells HS) and Gabriella Salazar (Marana HS) drove in runs on back-to-back RBI hits. With two outs in the inning, Zepeda and Zylinski-Wrobel followed with their own stretch of back-to-back RBI hits. Zylinski-Wrobel capped off the inning by scoring on a wild pitch to make it 7-0.

Marx hit a sacrifice-fly RBI in the 6th inning and Salazar stole home base to make it 9-4. Asher helped put the game away with a two-run homer bringing around Price.

Asher closed out the game going 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Salazar went 2 for 3 with an RBI, two runs scored and four steals while Zylinski-Wrobel finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two doubles. Marx was 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Price went 1 for 3 with a run.

Bracamonte picked up the win after she pitched four and one-third innings, giving up four runs (four earned) on 10 hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

The Aztecs play a non-conference doubleheader at Phoenix College on Saturday, Feb. 24. First game starts at noon.
