(Chandler, AZ)  The Park University Gilbert women’s basketball team picked the wrong night to have its worst shooting night of the year. The Bucs only shot 30 percent from the floor as they fell to Benedictine Mesa 56-49 at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.

The 49 points scored was a season low for the Bucs as they also only made one three-point shot on the evening which tied its worst mark in history. The Bucs have made a three-pointer in every game in its history, but prior to tonight had only had two other contests in 106 games where they only had made one three-pointer. This was the third in game 107.

The Bucs got off to a slow start in the first quarter only shooting 14 percent. This led to an eight-point deficit as BENU shot 40 percent from the floor to lead 15-7.

The Bucs shooting was much better in the second quarter as they shot 50 percent from the floor. The Redhawks also improved their shooting percentage to 44 percent for the quarter, but the Bucs were able to cut into the deficit to trail by five headed into the intermission.

For the second consecutive game, the Bucs did not make a three-point shot in the first half, going 0-5. Benedictine Mesa made its first four three-pointers as it went 4-6 from beyond the arc in the first half.

The second half was not much better for either team from the floor in a match up of the top two teams in the conference. Both teams struggled to make long range shots as Park made one and Benedictine did not make another, going 0-5 after starting the game 4-4.

Benedictine won the rebounding battle 41-35, despite the face the Bucs had more offensive boards 15-11. Despite the four board advantage, Park only had four second chance points which goes back to its shooting woes.

Individually, Kayla Schroeder had her lowest scoring game of the year only scoring 11 points and was held scoreless in the fourth quarter for the second time against the Redhawks, only taking one shot in the final frame.

Madison Chappell also had 11 points and added eight rebounds. Faith Watkins had 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks.

After the loss, the Bucs road to the Cal Pac regular season title just became much harder as the Bucs now must finish with a better record than Benedictine Mesa now that BENU won the season series 2-0.

The Bucs don’t have time to wallow in self-pity as the loss puts them in a tie with Antelope Valley who they have another crucial game with on Saturday in Lancaster, Calif. The Bucs beat the Pioneers back in November by eight points.
