Four Aztecs set new season records in the 8K race at the Highlander Invitational

(Riverside, CA)  The Pima Community College men’s cross country team competed in the Highlander Invitational on Saturday. The Aztecs finished in 15th place in the final standings out of 26 teams with a total of 413 points. Central Arizona College placed 11th with 312 and Mesa Community College was 13th with 332 points.

Sophomore Abraham Valenzuela (Palo Verde HS) was the top finisher for the Aztecs as he took 54th place out of 304 runners and closed out the 8K race (4.97 miles) with a time of 24 minutes, 57.7 seconds. His finish gave Pima 44 team points.

The next four finishers for the Aztecs all set new season PRs in the 8K. Freshman Declan Jorgenson (Ironwood Ridge HS) crossed the finish line in 88th place with a time of 25:27.0 and gave Pima 64 points.

Sophomore Justin VanDeberg (Gila Ridge HS) and freshman Jace Schaub (Canyon del Oro HS) finished back-to-back and their placements gave Pima 99 and 100 points respectively. VanDeberg closed out the race with a time of 26:14.9 and Schaub clocked his time at 26:15.2.

Freshman Evan Rasoumoff (Catalina Foothills HS) rounded out the team scoring with a time of 26:23.7 and 106 team points.

The Aztecs will compete in the NJCAA Region I, Division I Championships on Saturday, Oct. 28in Glendale. Race times are TBA.
