(Tempe, AZ) Arizona State University head women’s basketball coach Natasha Adairtoday announced the promotion of assistant coach Darrell Mosley to associate head coach.
“It is with great excitement I announce this promotion for Darrell. He has been recognized nationally as one of the best in the business and is truly an asset to our program,” said Adair. “Darrell provides not only phenomenal leadership, but great insight too. He’s a problem solver and a strategist who always exudes confidence. Darrell is the ultimate professional, leader, teacher and motivator all of which speaks to his tremendous work ethic. I’m grateful for his contributions on the court, off the court and in the community.”
Mosley, who was a member of Adair’s staff at Delaware where they helped lead the Blue Hens to the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship and the program’s first NCAA appearance since the 2013 season, joined Adair in Tempe after she was named ASU’s head coach in March 2022.
“I’m truly blessed to take on this new role, one that I accept with honor and gratitude,” said Mosley. “I am grateful to Coach Adair for the guidance she has given me and the confidence she has always had in my ability as I continue to help our program grow on and off the court. It’s a marathon, and I will continue to have a persistent mentality as we help return the program to prominence.”
In his first season on Adair’s ASU staff, Mosley was instrumental in the development of ASU’s talented backcourt. In 2022-23, Jaddan Simmons (Pac-12 All-Defense honorable mention) and Tyi Skinner (All-Pac-12 honorable mention), who will both be returning next season, earned Pac-12 honors as voted on by the league’s head coaches. Skinner, who finished second in the Pac-12 and 27th in the nation in scoring (19.2 ppg), was also named to the media’s 15-member All-Pac-12 team.
Mosley’s contributions were equally important in recruiting. In the immediate weeks after taking over the program, Adair and her staff signed multiple players who would go on to be key contributors last season.
Mosley joined Adair at Delaware in the spring of 2021 after a six-year stint as the head women’s basketball coach at Lincoln University.
While at Lincoln, Mosley collected 82 wins, the second-most victories in Lincoln history. During his time at Lincoln, the women’s basketball program excelled and advanced to the CIAA Tournament semifinals three consecutive seasons (2017, 2018 and 2019).
In his final complete season, Mosley coached the Lions to a school-record 23 victories, earning CIAA Coach of the Year honors and being a finalist for the WHoopDirt.com National Coach of the Year during the 2019-20 campaign.
Mosley made an immediate impact on the women’s basketball program and continued to climb up the all-time wins chart. He eclipsed the 50-win mark during the 2018-19 season where the Lions compiled a 17-14 record. The Lions registered 14 or more wins in all but one season under Mosley’s leadership.
From guiding the Lions to a third-place finish and a victory in the conference tournament in his first season to a consistent presence as a high seed in the conference tournament and victories over nationally-ranked opponents, Mosley’s teams were top contenders in the CIAA year after year.
Prior to being named the head women’s basketball coach at Lincoln, he served as an assistant coach on the men’s basketball staff at Lincoln for five seasons. Mosley played a vital role in the team’s turnaround of success. In his final season on the men’s staff, the Lions had their first 20-win campaign as a Division II institution during the 2013-14 season, where the Lions won the 2014 ECAC Men’s Basketball Tournament Championship.
Born and raised in Chester, Pa., Mosley played collegiately at Delaware State for two seasons where he helped guide the team to a conference title and NIT appearance. Mosley transferred to Lincoln University to finish out his basketball career where he became the starting point guard and team captain.
