Aztecs Softball sweeps Paradise Valley CC in final regular season home games

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (34-21, 30-16 in ACCAC) closed out the regular season home schedule on Tuesday in an ACCAC doubleheader against Paradise Valley Community College (11-33, 11-33). They’re on the road to close the regular season on Saturday.

The Aztecs snapped a four-game losing streak and picked up two wins over the Pumas. Sophomore Stephanie Tapia (Cibola HS) finished the day 2 for 6 with four RBIs and two runs scored while freshman Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) went 4 for 6 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) closed out the day going 3 for 7 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Sophomore Alejandra Castro was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and four runs.

 

Game 1: Aztecs 10, Pumas 1 (5 innings)

The Aztecs used an eight-run 2nd inning to take control.

Tapia got the inning going with a two-run homer to bring in freshman Alexis Tsosie-Hood, who had a leadoff walk. The Aztecs loaded the bases as sophomore Analisa Gomez (University HS) hit an RBI single with one out to score Castro. Zepeda followed with a two-run RBI single to plate freshman Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS) and Munoz to make it 5-0. Zylinski-Wrobel followed with a three-run shot to cap off the inning as Pima took an 8-0 advantage.

Munoz hit an RBI single in the 3rd inning to bring around Chacon. Zylinski-Wrobel hit a double and scored a run in the 4th inning.
Zylinski-Wrobel finished the game 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Zepeda went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Tapia closed it out going 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Munoz and Gomez each finished 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run. Chacon scored two runs.
Tsosie-Hood picked up the win (9-6) as she pitched all five innings, giving up one run.

Game 2: Aztecs 15, Pumas 6 (5 innings)

The Aztecs put together another eight-run inning to take the lead for good as Alejandra Castro hit a walk-off two run home run to end it in five innings.

Tapia hit a two-run RBI double as part of the 1st inning barrage. The Aztecs had a total of five RBI singles in the inning by Gomez, Zylinski-Wrobel, freshman Madison Fillman-Moreno (Sabino HS), sophomore Mia Casadei (Tanque Verde HS) and Zepeda.

Fillman-Moreno had an RBI double in the 2nd inning and finished the game 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Zepeda added an RBI single in the 4th inning and went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run.

Castro was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Casadei had an RBI single in the 2nd inning and finished 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Munoz and Gomez each had an RBI and two runs scored in the game.

Sophomore Alissandra Montiel (Cholla HS) picked up the win in a relief appearance as she pitched three innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits with one strikeout and two walks.

The Aztecs honored their seven sophomores after the games: Mia Casadei (Tanque Verde HS), Alejandra Castro, Wendy Castro (Canyon del Oro HS), Analisa Gomez (University HS), Alissandra Montiel (Cholla HS), Elise Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) and Stephanie Tapia (Cibola HS).

The Aztecs close out the regular season on Saturday when they play an ACCAC doubleheader at Glendale Community College. First game starts at noon.
