Aztecs Men’s Golf closes regular season with second place finish at EMCC Invitational, Shero and Holst named All-Conference

(Goodyear, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s golf team closed out the regular season on Sunday at the Estrella Mountain CC Invitational held at the Tres Rios Golf Course in Goodyear.

The No. 5 ranked Aztecs took second place for the fourth time in six tournaments this season and shot their second-best collective round, finishing with a seven-under par 561 (279-282). The Aztecs held the lead after the first round of play, but South Mountain Community College claimed first in the final standings with a 15-under par score of 553 (281-272).

Sophomore Max Krueger (Salpointe Catholic HS) claimed his third medal of the season as he took third place in the individual standings with a season-best score of 138. He shot a season-best 3-under par 68 in the first round and shot a 1-under par 70 in Sunday’s round.

Freshman Daniel Aitken shot season-best rounds of 70 and 71 as he finished tied for seventh place in the final individual standings with a two-day total of 141 (1-under par).

Freshman Herman Holst, who played in all six tournaments this season, closed it out with a 1-over par 143 (72-71).

Sophomore Tommy Rosenvall tied for 16th in the standings as he shot his best collective round of the season with a 144 (73-71). He closed out Sunday’s round with a season-best round of 71.

Sophomore Jay Shero finished the final round with a 1-under par 70 as he tied for 18thwith a score of 145 (75-70). Sophomore Caleb Knight had a 2-under 69 after the first day and also tied for 18th with a 145 (69-76).

Shero and Holst were selected second team All-ACCAC conference. Shero played in all six tournaments and won the individual title at the Pima Invitational on Feb. 28. He finished in the top 10 in three of the tournaments and averaged a score of 72.2 per round. Holst had three top 10 finishes during the regular season and earned medalist honors in two tournaments. He shot an average of 72.9 per round.

 

The Aztecs will look to go back-to-back as NJCAA Region I, Division I Champions when they compete at the Region I Championships from Thursday-Sunday April 27-30 at the Corte Bella Golf Club in Sun City West.
