Matt Romero and Anu Reis combine for no-hitter as Aztecs Baseball splits with Community Christian College

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (10-4) hosted a non-conference doubleheader against Community Christian College on Friday at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field.

The Pima bats went cold in the first game as it struggled on timely plays, but the Aztecs responded in the second game.

Game 1: Community Christian College Saints 1, Pima CC Aztecs 0

The Aztecs finished with three hits but drew eight walks. They stranded seven runners on base for the game. Freshman Benji Cazares (Tucson Magnet HS) was 1 for 1 with two walks. Freshman David Shackelford went 1 for 3 with a stolen base while sophomore Bradon Mondeau (Cienega HS) finished 1 for 4 with a double.

Freshman Garrett Hicks (Verrado) took the loss (0-1) as he pitched one inning, giving up one run (one earned) on one hit with two strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Jaeden Swanberg (Salpointe Catholic HS) started the game, and pitched four innings giving up two hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 20, Community Christian College Saints 0 (7 innings)

Sophomore left-handed pitchers Matt Romero and Anu Reis combined to throw a no-hitter. It was Pima’s first no-hitter since Darius Garcia’s five-inning no-hitter (seven strikeouts, two walks vs. GateWay Community College) on March 26,2022. It was the first seven-inning no hitter since Mason Myhre’s (Canyon del Oro HS), no-hit bid where he gave up one run (one earned) and had 11 strikeouts vs. Chandler-Gilbert Community College on April 28,2018.

Romero pitched four innings with seven strikeouts and one walk on 52 pitches. Reis threw the final three innings with three strikeouts and three walks on 48 pitches.

The Pima offense scored in every inning to seal the run-rule victory. The Aztecs hit five triples for the game, which included two from freshman Brant Kragel. He hit a two-run RBI triple in the 4th inning to score Mondeau and sophomore Hunter Faildo to make it 10-0. He hit another RBI triple in the 6th inning to bring in sophomore Kaden Stremick as Pima led 19-0 at that point.

Kragel finished the game 2 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman Elijah Reeves (Marana HS) closed it out going 2 for 2 with three RBIs, two runs scored and two walks. He hit a two-run RBI triple in the 5th inning plating sophomore Rocco Gump (Seton Catholic HS) and freshman Austin Madsen (Canyon del Oro HS) to put the score at 18-0.

Mondeau finished the game 3 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored while freshman Ruben Castro (Tucson Magnet HS) went 1 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore Luis Garcia (Salpointe Catholic HS) closed out the game going 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run.

The Aztecs will play a single game against Community Christian College on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Field. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
