Devils win the shootout 45-38 over Washington

(Tempe, AZ)  The ASU Sun Devils (1-4) were looking to bounce back after a 4th straight loss against a highly ranked Washington Huskies who came in 4-1.

The Devils haven’t had as quick of a start as they’d like, and have lost 4 straight.

This is the 3rd game by new interim head coach Shaun Aguano after Herm Edwards was let go.

In a bit of a surprise, Huskies were wearing their home purple and white uniforms. Both teams were coming off losses.

Each of the Huskies’ wins have been by 11 or more points. ASU has yet to be in a close game.

ASU’s streak of 100 or more rushing yards ended at USC. Transfer X Valladay from Wyoming wanted to start that streak back up.

Emory Jones only had  4 passing TDs, 3 INTs, and for the season is 89-142 (62.6%) but hadn’t been consistent in moving the offense.

Washington passing game coming in was on point and would test ASU’s secondary.

The Devils have had 7 straight games dating back to last season with at least 1 interception.

ASU leads the all time series 21-16 winning the last 12 of 14 games and Washington had not won a game since 2001 in Sun Devil Stadium.

1st Quarter

ASU won the coin toss and deferred. Washington’s first drive sliced up the ASU defense with strong rushing.

the Huskies scored first on QB Michael Penix Jr. 1 yard run. The drive took 12 plays going 75 yards in 4:31.

ASU’s first drive QB Emory Jones came out slinging the ball, and RB X Valladay getting crucial yardage for first downs. The drive was stopped but the Devils got a field goal kicked by K Carter Brown to cut the deficit to 7-3 to end the first quarter.

2nd Quarter 

Washington got a 27 yard field goal by K Peyton Henry to go up 10-3.

The Sun Devils ripped off a couple of big yard plays thanks to a 11 yard Valladay rush and a Giovanni Sanders 17 yard reception.

When Jones took off with the ball, he slide, but was knocked out by the Husky’s Asa Turner who was disqualified for a targeting penalty.

Marana Tigers alum Trenton Bourguet came in for Jones. Valladay  scored on an 11 yard run to tie it at 10-10.

Arizona State’s drive started on their own 10 yard line. Daniyel Ngata broke a 26 yard run. Bourguet got comfortable and threw a 20 yard pass to Elijah Badger for the score. ASU had scored 14 unanswered points.

Washington’s fourth drive started off with a return to the Washington 22.Michael Penix Jr. throws an INT and ASU continues their 1 INT a game streak to 8. with a pick 6 for 38 yards by S Jordan Clark, 24-10 ASU (3 plays, 15 yards, :50 possession by Washington) ASU had 21 unanswered points.

Washington came back with a TD from Wayne Taulapapa  to cut the Devil’s lead at the half to 24-17.

Washington was 15 carries for 72 yards and 148 yards in the air on 16-25 completions.

ASU had 82 rushing yards on 16 attempts and 116 yards in the air on a 13-17 effort.

3rd Quarter

Washington got the ball after a Sun Devil punt. The Huskies decided to go for it on 4th and 1 at their own 32 and lost 3 yards and turned the ball back to ASU.

The Devils took full advantage of the great field possession by their defense as Bourguet passed to Elijah Badger for a 10 yard TD, 31-17.

UW ripped off a 20 yard run by Richard Newton. Cameron Davis scored on a 4 yard run and it was 31-24.

Bourguet came out slinging a 38 yarder to Thompson, then Ngata scored from a yard out to extend the lead back to 38-24.

Huskies Davis ran for 42 yards blasting through a big hole. After a couple of penalties, Davis in the wildcat formation took the direct snap scored from the 1 yard line to cut the lead to 38-31 to head into the final quarter.

4th Quarter

Bourguet was intercepted by Banks on the second play of the fourth quarter.

Washington possession began at the ASU 48. Penix threw a 25 yard pass to Rome Odunze.

To cap off the drive Davis scored from the 5 yard line and it was knotted up at 38-38.

Another big pass by Bourguet to Thompson for a 32 yard pickup. ASU was having their way on offense keeping the Washington defense on its heels. The Devils scored their final points on a 2 yard touchdown and a 45-38 with 2:44 left.

Washington without a timeout started in their own 14 yard line. The Devils blitz caused a sack and a loss of 10 yards.

Washington was left at their 4 yard line. Penix Jr. got hit after the pass by B.J. Green who was flagged for both targeting and roughing the passer.

Dylan Morris came in for one play for Penix Jr. with the ball now on their own 46 yard line. Washington racked up yards in their hurry-up offense to give them a shot at a game tying touchdown.

The following play a bad snap and Penix Jr. was sacked for a loss of 30 and ASU got called for defensive delay of game.

ASU called a time out. The Huskies from their 44 yard line threw a long pass which was well short of the end zone and the Sun a devils won 45-38.

Washington continued the streak of losses in Sun Devils Stadium, marking another year since they last won in 2001.

The Huskies controlled the ball and led in time of possession 31:57 to ASU’s 28:03.

Washington had a total of 458 yards with 134 rushing on 33 attempts (4.1 avg) and 324 passing yards on 34-54 (9.5 per completion).

ASU had a of 397 total yards 156 rushing on 32 attempts (4.9 ypc) and 241 passing yards on 22-30 (11.0 per completion).

ASU moves to 2-4 on the season with a bye next week.

Washington drops to 4-2 and will play Arizona next Saturday in Seattle.
