Sugar Skulls announce Hurtis Chinn as Head Coach

(Tucson, AZ)  The Tucson Sugar Skulls are proud to officially announce Hurtis Chinn as their next Head Coach.

Chinn was named the 2022 Assistant Coach of the Year by the Indoor Football League in his second season with the Sugar Skulls as the offensive coordinator. He guided the Skulls to the second-highest scoring offense in the regular season. Chinn spent the season prior to last in Arizona with the Rattlers as their Quarterbacks and Running Backs Coach.

Chinn was also on the Tucson coaching staff as the Offensive Coordinator in 2019 when they were the first-ever expansion franchise to make the playoffs and held the 4th highest-scoring offense in the league. He has coached two quarterbacks that are two-time MVPs in the league and has appeared in the playoffs or championship game every year in IFL since 2013.

Coach Chinn’s message to Sugar Skulls fans: “To start I’d like to thank Cathy Guy and the wonderful ownership at the Sugar Skulls for allowing me this opportunity to build something special here in Tucson. My number one goal is to give the people of Tucson something to be proud of and enjoy. Through relentless work in the community, building healthy relationships, and togetherness we will produce a product that fans can smile about.”

Added Chinn, “With strong ownership and the support of the people of Tucson, we will create a winning atmosphere on and off the field consistently. I’m appreciative, excited, proud, and ready to get to work! Thank you all.”

Sugar Skulls’ CEO Cathy Guy stated: “It’s an exciting day for Sugar Skulls fans and the Tucson community as a whole. Coach Chinn brings a wealth of football experience combined with leadership qualities that exhibit everything we take pride in building here in Tucson.”

Guy added, “We did our due diligence and had a thorough search, interviewing many qualified candidates. We feel that Coach Chinn is ultimately the right fit for us both on and off the field to continue building the championship culture we are striving for.”

Before coming to the desert, Chinn was a member of the 2018 IFL Champion Iowa Barnstormers, as the team’s assistant head coach and wide receivers coach. Prior to joining Iowa, Chinn coached for six years with the Nebraska Danger, including as the head coach in his final season with the team.

Chinn played three years in the IFL for the River City Rage and the Danger prior to beginning his coaching career. Chinn also played college football at Western New Mexico University.

Coach Chinn will be available for press via zoom or phone, as he is currently in Miami where he is recruiting for the Sugar Skulls.
