Aztecs Men’s Track & Field place third at NJCAA Region I Championships

(Mesa, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s track & field team closed out competition in the NJCAA Region I Championships on Thursday.

The Aztecs finished in third place in the final team standings with a score of 178. Mesa Community College took first place with 258 and Central Arizona College grabbed second place with 212 points. The Aztecs beat out Paradise Valley Community College (122) and Glendale Community College (48).

Sophomore Donovan Henderson, who took home the region title in the Long Jump on Tuesday, took second place in the Triple Jump with a finishing mark of 14.52 meters (47-feet, 7.75-inches), securing eight team points for the Aztecs.

Sophomore Chalen Lozano (Marana HS) also earned eight points as he placed second in the 5,000 meters with a personal-record time of 15 minutes, 35.37 seconds.

The 4×400 relay team of freshmen Tristan Spalding (Palo Verde HS), Gamar Garem (Amphitheater HS), Nathan Plant and Orion Barger (Canyon del Oro HS) closed out strong to snag second place and earn a national qualifying time of 3:15.42 giving Pima another eight points.

The 4×100 relay squad of freshmen Jacob Rosales (Walden Grove HS), Spalding, Terrion Amicks (Peoria HS) and sophomore Andre Maytorena (Nogales HS) also earned a national qualifying time and a personal-best as they took third place with a time of 41.30; picking up six team points.

Barger gained six points for the Aztecs with his third place finish in the 400-meter race as he crossed at 47.90.

Amicks took third place in the Triple Jump with a jump of 13.52 meters (44-4.25).

Freshman Nathan Jones (Show Low HS) took third place in the Discus with a mark of 42.71 meters (140-1).

Freshman Joshua Bowen finished the Region I Championship scoring a total of 25 team points for the Aztecs.

Emmanuel Corral (Pusch Ridge Christian HS) – 4th in 5,000 meters 15:35.37 (5 points)

Joshua Bowen – 5th in the Shot Put 13.16 meters (43-2.25) (4 points); 6th in Discus 37.88 meters (124-3) (3 points); 7th in High Jump 1.72 meters (5-7.75) (2 points)

Tristan Spalding (Palo Verde HS) – 5th in 200 meters 21.92 (4 points); 6th in 100 meters 10.72 (3 points)

Bryan Stiles (Kofa HS) – 5th in 110 meter hurdles 16.14 (4 points)

Devin Jackson – 6th in 110 meter hurdles 16.43 (3 points)

Nathan Jones (Show Low HS) – 6th in the Shot Put 12.85 meters (42-2) (3 points)

Gamar Garem (Amphitheater HS) – 6th in 400 meters 49.78 (3 points)

Zachary Maxwell (Show Low HS) – 7th in Shot Put 12.77 meters (41-10.75) (2 points)

Ali Mohamed (Desert View HS) – 7th in Triple Jump 13.08 meters (42-11) (2 points)

Jacob Rosales (Walden Grove HS) – 7th in 100 meters 10.81 (2 points)

Sean Laura (Benson HS) – 7th in 400 meter hurdles 1:00.13 (2 points)

Joel Gardner (Ironwood Ridge HS) – 8th in 1,500 meters 4:15.80 (1 point)

The Aztecs will compete at the NJCAA Division I National Championships on May 19-21 at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson, KS.
