Escobar hits two home runs but Aztecs softball falls at No. 12 Yavapai College

(Prescott, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (8-14, 8-14 in ACCAC) could not stop Yavapai College’s (25-5, 20-2) offense on Saturday as the two teams met in an ACCAC conference doubleheader in Prescott.
The Aztecs hit five home runs on the day; two by freshman Isabella Escobar but the Roughriders scored 33 runs.

Game 1: (12) Yavapai College Roughriders 11, Pima CC Aztecs 3 (6 innings)

The Aztecs took an early lead but the Roughriders scored seven unanswered runs. The Aztecs rallied with two runs in the top of the 6th inning but Yavapai closed the out the game with four in the bottom-half of the inning.

Freshman Anisah Triste hit a solo home run to centerfield to put the Aztecs ahead with two outs.

The Aztecs tacked on two runs in the 6th inning. Escobar drew a walk and scored on freshman Jazmin Ayala’s (Sunnyside HS) RBI double. Freshman Mariah Bartlett hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to score pinch runner Andrica Gomez to make it 7-3.

Triste finished the game 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run. Ayala was 1 for 2 with an RBI while sophomore Giselle Muñoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) went 1 for 2.

Triste took the loss (4-8) as she pitched two and one-third innings giving up six runs (six earned) on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

Game 2: (12) Yavapai College Roughriders 22, Pima CC Aztecs 9 (5 innings)

The Roughriders scored three or more runs in every inning as the Aztecs struggled to close the gap despite hitting four home runs.

The Aztecs tried to cut into Yavapai’s lead in the 3rd inning. Escobar hit her first home run of the game with a 2-run shot to score freshman Lorisa Martinez as Pima trailed 11-4.

Bartlett followed with a solo homer to centerfield. Freshman Kelli Samorano (Tucson Magnet HS) scored on an error to make it 11-6.

Yavapai countered with five runs in the bottom of the 3rd.

Escobar capped off the 4th inning with another 2-run blast to centerfield to drive in Gomez. Triste scored on an error earlier in the inning. Pima cut the score to 16-9 but the Roughriders scored six runs in the bottom of the 4th to pull away again.

Muñoz put the Aztecs ahead with a leadoff home run in the 1st inning. Ayala hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to score freshman Lesly Cazares (Desert View HS), who drew a walk earlier in the inning.

Escobar finished the game 2 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs. Bartlett was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run while Muñoz went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Samorano finished 1 for 2 with a run scored.

Ayala took the loss (1-2) as she pitched one and one-third innings giving up seven runs (seven earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
