Enriquez has four hits, pitching staff gives up no earned runs as baseball take two from Colorado Northwestern

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (5-0) started the weekend off on a high note winning the first two games on Friday in their series with Colorado Northwestern Community College (0-2).

Freshman Jose Enriquez finished the day 4 for 6 at the plate with a key RBI hit in the first game. The Aztecs pitching staff was on as it gave up no earned run to the Spartans.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 4, Colorado Northwestern CC Spartans 1 (7 innings): The Spartans got on the scoreboard first in the top of the 1st inning but some timely hits in the 5th and 6th innings helped the Aztecs take the first game.

Freshman Daniel Durazo (Salpointe Catholic HS) got things going with a leadoff single in the 5th. After being sacrificed to second base, freshman Andres Mendoza (Desert View HS) tied the game with an RBI double to drive him in.

In the 6th inning, sophomore JJ Rollon (Skyline HS) drew a walk and freshman Alex Kelch (Tucson HS) hit a single to kick off the inning. Enriquez followed with the go-ahead RBI single to drive in Rollon and make it 2-1. Kelch would later score on a throwing error. Sophomore Angel Ochoa (Canyon del Oro HS) added to the lead with an RBI double scoring Chaison Miklich, who drew a two-out walk earlier in the inning.

Enriquez finished 1 for 3 with an RBI while Ochoa went 1 for 2 with an RBI. Mendoza was 1 for 3 with an RBI and Rollon went 0 for 1 with a run scored and two walks.

Sophomore Angel Castillo (1-0) picked up the win after pitching the final two and one-third innings giving up one hit with one strikeout.

He relieved freshman Ian Mejia (Sahuarita HS) with the bases loaded and two outs in the 5th. Castillo got out of the jam with a strikeout to end the threat. Mejia started the game, and pitched four and two-third innings giving up one run (none earned) on one hit with eight strikeouts and six walks.

Game 2:  Pima CC Aztecs 2, Colorado Northwestern CC Spartans 1 (7 innings): The Aztecs took the lead early and the pitching staff did the rest to hold the Spartans at bay.

Sophomore Alex Bustamante (Canyon del Oro HS) led off the 1st inning with an RBI double and was driven in by Kelch with one out to put the Aztecs on the board.Freshman Ajay Ram (Ironwood Ridge HS) led off the 2nd inning with a single and later scored on a throwing error to make it 2-0.

Enriquez was 3 for 3 with a double while Kelch went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Bustamante was 1 for 3 with a run scored. Ram finished 1 for 2 with a run.

Freshman Jaren Jackson did the rest as he threw five shutout innings and finished aftersix innings giving up one run (none earned) on four hits with six strikeouts and one walk on 92 pitches. Bustmante set the Spartans down in order to close out the game. He had one strikeout.

The Aztecs will play another doubleheader on Saturday against Colorado Northwestern Community College. First pitch is at 11:00 a.m.
