Spruit sets Pima school record with nine 3-pointers as Aztecs women’s basketball beats Arizona Western

Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (22-8, 16-6 in ACCAC) closed out the regular season on Tuesday with a statement win over a Division I opponent.

Sophomore Izzy Spruit (Mesquite HS) drained a new Pima school record of nine 3-pointers and scored 30 points as the No. 13 ranked Aztecs beat Arizona Western College 76-65 in Yuma. Spruit went 10 for 17 from the field to go along with five rebounds and two steals.

The Aztecs trailed at the end of the first quarter but took a 31-25 halftime lead after outscoring the Matadors 19-11 in the second quarter. The Aztecs took a double-digit advantage at 52-40 to close out the third.

Sophomore Christine Ortega (Flowing Wells HS) scored 20 points on 8 for 11 shooting and also had nine rebounds. Freshman Jacqulynn Nakai (Coconino HS) contributed with 11 points, five assists and three steals.

The Aztecs swept the regular season meetings with the Matadors. They won 89-74 last month at the West Campus Gymnasium.

The Aztecs secured a 16-6 record in the ACCAC conference for the second straight year. This is the third straight year the program has won 20 games or more.

The Aztecs will be the No. 2 seed for the Region I, Division II Tournament. They’ll play No. 3 Glendale Community College on Tuesday at the West Campus Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
