Klunder’s 6 RBIs help Aztecs baseball split with Chandler-Gilbert CC

Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College baseball team (12-10, 4-8 in ACCAC) earned another ACCAC conference doubleheader split on Tuesday.

This is the fourth time the Aztecs have split with an ACCAC opponent. The bats were silenced again in the first game but they came back to life in the second game.

Game 1: Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 2, Pima CC Aztecs 0 (7 innings): The Aztecs managed four hits for the game as sophomore Marcus Mendez (Desert View HS) went 2 for 2. Freshman Michael Wong went 1 for 2 and Javier Nava finished 1 for 3.

Freshman Adam Moraga (Sunnyside HS) pitched all six innings giving up two runs (two earned) on four hits with five strikeouts on 76 pitches.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 12, Chandler-Gilbert CC 8: The Aztecs took control with six runs in the 3rd inning but had to cut a Coyotes’ rally short.

Up 3-0 in the 3rd with the bases load, sophomore Logan Klunder capped off the inning with a grand slam to make it 7-0. Sophomore Jesus Solis (Nogales HS) scored on an error and freshman Enrique Porchas (Kofa HS) scored on a wild pitch earlier in the inning.

The Coyotes scored four runs in the 6th inning and two in the 7th to cut Pima’s lead to 10-8. Klunder came through with two outs in the 8th inning with an RBI single, which was followed by freshman Matthew Hackman’s (Empire HS) RBI single.

Klunder hit a sacrifice-fly RBI in the 2nd inning to put the Aztecs on the board. He finished the game 2 for 4 with six RBIs and a run scored. Hackman went 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Mendez was 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Wong finished 0 for 1 but scored three runs and had four walks.

Freshman Ryon Craig (3-0) picked up the win in a relief appearance. He pitched two innings giving up four runs (two earned) on two hits with one strikeout and two walks.

The Aztecs will be back on the road on Saturday when they play an ACCAC conference doubleheader at Glendale Community College. The first game starts at 12:00 p.m.
