Aztecs women’s soccer falls in double overtime in Region semifinals  

 

 

Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College women’s soccer team played in a wild game with Arizona Western College (15-4-3) on Thursday in the NJCAA Region I, Division I semifinals.

The No. 2 seeded Aztecs came up short in double overtime in their 4-3 loss to the No. 3 seeded Matadors.

Arizona Western’s Karla Navarro scored the golden goal in the box with 58 seconds left to seal the win.

Sophomore Alexis Hernandez (Ironwood Ridge HS) produced a hat trick for the Aztecs. She scored in the 11th and 21st minutes to give the Aztecs a 2-0 lead. Pima led 2-1 at halftime after the Matadors netted a goal in the 38th minute.

Hernandez scored her third goal in the 55th minute to make it a two-goal advantage again at 3-1. The Matadors responded with goals in the 60th and 78thminutes.

Hernandez had another shot at the goal as she faced off with the Matador goalkeeper but couldn’t convert in the 79th minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tara Kase (Buena HS) made a couple of great saves in the first overtime to help force the second extra period.

The loss snapped Pima’s seven game-winning streak as they had also earned shutout wins in their last four games. The Aztecs finished the season at 15-5-1 overall and 15-4-1 in ACCAC conference play. This was the fourth straight year the Aztecs had won 15 games or more.
