Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (4-1, 3-0 in ACCAC) struggled in the second quarter but found its groove in the second half on Tuesday against Chandler-Gilbert Community College (1-7, 0-2).
The No. 6 ranked Aztecs defeated the Coyotes 84-66 after outscoring them 46-25 for the second half.
The Aztecs managed just nine points in the second quarter and trailed 41-38 at halftime. Down 49-45, the Aztecs went on an 8-0 run and closed out the quarter on an 11-5 run to take a 64-56 lead. The Aztecs took a double digit lead when freshman Macey Rose (Basha HS) hit a three-pointer and scored a jumper to make it 69-56 with 8:23 left in the fourth quarter.
The Aztecs produced three double-doubles as Nakai finished with 17 points and 12 assists. Sophomores Christine Ortega (Flowing Wells HS) and Aubre Fortner each had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Alliyah Bryant (Mesquite HS) finished in double figures with 11 points going 4 for 8 from the field. Rose had seven points and seven rebounds off the bench.
The Aztecs will head to the Snow College Tournament in Ephraim, UT. They’ll play Colorado Northwestern Community College on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
