Isaiah Hill scores 22 points as Men’s Basketball uses 14-0 second half run to beat Glendale CC

(Glendale, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (22-0, 11-0 in ACCAC) won its 22nd straight game on Wednesday after facing another tough battle at Glendale Community College (14-7, 5-5).

The No. 5 ranked Aztecs distanced themselves with two second half scoring runs as they went on to beat Gauchos 83-71.

The Aztecs and the Gauchos came out for the second half firing on all cylinders as each team scored on their first three possessions. With the game tied at 47-47 with 16:47 left, they cooled off and went scoreless for the next four minutes. The Gauchos took the lead at 49-47 at the 12:26 mark but sophomore Isaac Johnson quickly scored on a layup to tie the game. The Aztecs held Glendale scoreless again for another 4:05 as they went on a 14-0 run. Freshman Isaiah Hill (Premier Prep Academy) scored seven points during the stretch as they led 61-49.

A Glendale three-pointer cut Pima’s lead to 66-58 but the Aztecs scored six straight points and later got back-to-back three-pointers from freshman Rowan McKenzie (Boulder Creek HS) and sophomore Mason Hunt (Bradshaw Mountain HS) to make it 78-60. The Aztecs never lost the double-digit advantage for the rest of the game.

The Aztecs led by as much as eight points in the first half at 29-21 after Hill converted on a three-point play. Pima was up 38-32 at halftime and outscored the Gauchos 45-39 in the second half.

  • Hill scored a team-high 22 points as he went 9-for-16 from the field and 4 -for-8 from beyond the arc. He fell short of a triple-double adding eight rebounds and eight assists.
  • Hunt finished with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds along with three assists while Johnson added 15 points and eight rebounds.
  • McKenzie and sophomore Brock Mendoza each scored 11 points. McKenzie had six rebounds and six assists while Mendoza grabbed six bounds.

The Aztecs will hit the road again on Saturday when they play at Mesa Community College. Tip-off is at 4:00 p.m.
