(Mesa, AZ) The Park University Gilbert beach volleyball team dropped a pair of matches today at Arizona Athletic Grounds in Mesa, Ariz., barely losing to NCAA Division II Wayne State and NAIA No. 1 OUAZ.
Match 1 – Wayne State 3, Park Gilbert 2
In the first match against Wayne State, the Bucs won at the top two spots as the No. 1 pair of Railey Druxman and Daisy Moates won in three sets, taking the third 15-13. The No. 2 flight of Grace Baker and Nichole Gary are really starting to come into their own as they won for the second day in a row against WSC’s No. 2 team of Jordan McCormick and Channatee Robles who they also beat yesterday.
The No. 2 and 4 flights go out to play first and the No. 4 pair of Daniella Miranda-Johnson and Porsche Bauer had a chance to give the Bucs a 2-0 lead and would have ultimately won the match with the win at No. 1. But they fell in a tough third set 16-14. Miranda-Johnson and Bauer held match points in the third at 14-13 but could not get the needed final tally to pull the upset.
This is the closest the Bucs have come to beating Wayne State who they have played each of the last four seasons.
Match 2 – OUAZ 4, Park Gilbert 1
The Bucs fell for the third time this season to the top-ranked Spirit, but this is the first match were the Bucs have been able to win a match.
The No. 2 pair of Baker and Gary picked up their third consecutive win with a straight set sweep of the No. 2 OUAZ flight. The No. 3 flight of Taylor Van Winkle and Jess Goldsmith took OUAZ to three sets but fell 15-9 in the deciding set.
