(St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands) An 18-6 Texas scoring run to close out the first half put the Sun Devil women’s basketball team in a halftime deficit it was unable to overcome in an 82-42 loss to the No. 12 Longhorns on Thursday at the Paradise Jam.
Trayanna Crisp posted her fourth consecutive double-figure scoring game with 11 points, a point total matched by Treasure Hunt who recorded 11 of ASU’s 21 bench points.
Two areas that severely hindered ASU’s chances of pulling off the upset were in points off turnovers (24-8) and second chance points (18-1). The latter category was a direct result of Texas’ 47-32 advantage in rebounds, including a plus-13 total on the offensive glass (21-8).
The Sun Devils (4-2) came into the game having accumulated a double-digit point total in all 20 quarters they had played. Against Texas (5-0), ASU had that streak broken after the Longhorns jumped out to an 18-8 lead after 10 minutes.
ASU had its best shooting quarter of the game in the second frame, making 64 percent of its attempts (7-11). The Sun Devils put together their best series of plays in the opening minutes of the quarter as they scored seven consecutive points to cut a 12-point deficit to five after Jalyn Brown’s turnaround jumper with seven minutes left in the half. An exchange of baskets, including a layup by Hunt once again brought ASU within five, 22-17.
Texas assumed slowly assumed control of the game by scoring 18 of the last 24 points of the second quarter to take a 40-23 lead at the intermission.
After a jumper by Hunt produced the first points of the third quarter to get ASU within 15, the Sun Devils had another scoring drought. The next two times they scored, the Sun Devils were down by 19 – 45-26 – and 26 points – 54-28.
Maggie Besselink led ASU in rebounds with five while Kadidia Toure, Brown and Sandra Magolico had four boards each. Brown also added to ASU’s bench scoring total with seven points.
The Sun Devils continue play at the Paradise Jam on Friday (3:45 p.m. MST) when they face South Florida (5-1) before closing out play at the tournament on Saturday (3:45 p.m. MST) when they take on High Point (3-2). Both games can be seen on ESPN+ (Note: a paid ESPN+ subscription is required to view the games).
