(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (4-1) hosted a special game on Saturday against Arizona Christian University JV.
The No. 12 ranked Aztecs beat ACU JV 85-71 as they hosted the First Annual Indigenous People Celebration.
The Aztecs wore specialized uniforms to mark the occasion. There was a pre-game prayer and the Native American National Anthem was sung. There were also halftime performances and presentations.
Sophomore Melissa Simmons led the Aztecs with a team-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds.
Sophomore Nikya Orange (Tanque Verde HS) finished with a double-double of 13 points and 16 rebounds; which included seven offensive boards.
Sophomore Angel Addleman (Palo Verde HS) went 5 for 9 from the field and finished with 12 points while freshman Matehya Aberle (Holbrook HS) also went 5 for 9 from the field and had 11 points.
Sophomore Luisayde Chavez (Rio Rico HS) also added 11 points and six assists. Sophomore Jaslyn Booker (Buena HS) fell short of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
The Aztecs will begin ACCAC conference play on Wednesday against Arizona Western College at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
