(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (3-1) played its 2021-22 home opener on Thursday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.
The No. 12 ranked Aztecs defeated Utah State University-Eastern 75-67.
The Aztecs took a 40-29 lead at halftime but the Eagles went on a 14-4 run to begin the third quarter to cut it to 44-43. With the game tied at 48-48, the Aztecs responded with a 13-2 run to end the third as the Aztecs retook the double digit advantage at 61-50.
The Eagles started the fourth quarter on an 11-4 run to cut Pima’s lead to four at 65-61 but the Aztecs scored four straight points.
Sophomore Luisayde Chavez (Rio Rico HS) scored a team-high 19 points to go along with eight rebounds, five steals and three assists.
Sophomores Melissa Simmons and Jaslyn Booker (Buena HS) each finished with 18 points. Booker also had six offensive rebounds off the bench.
The Aztecs return to the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Saturday for the Indigenous People Celebration game against Arizona Christian University JV. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
