(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College men’s soccer team (11-0, 5-0 in ACCAC) played another tough contest against Phoenix College (4-5, 3-2) on Thursday but the Aztecs found a way to keep their undefeated streak alive.
Sophomore Manuel Quiroz (Sunnyside HS) scored on a penalty kick in the 93rd minute to give the No. 1 ranked Aztecs a 2-1 road win over the Bears. Sophomore Rramon Isaku was fouled in the box to set up the penalty kick.
Player’s Quote: “It was a pretty big penalty kick. I was confident I was going to score and I just picked a side,” Quiroz said. “Phoenix is always a hard team to play against. They worked hard all game and we had to match their energy, and we did. We knew how important this game was and it could have decided our season.”
The Aztecs got on the board in the 4th minute when sophomore Brian Vu (Rincon HS) scored to put the Aztecs up 1-0 off a deflection on the corner kick inbound.
The Bears tied the game on an own goal in the 49th minute.
The Aztecs finished with seven shots on goal and sophomore Juan Suarez (Desert View HS) finished with seven saves.
The Aztecs complete their busy week on Saturday when they host Scottsdale Community College at 7:00 p.m.
Pima goals: Brian Vu 4th minute; Manuel Quiroz (penalty kick) 93rd minute.
