(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s cross country team claimed second place at the ACCAC/Region I Championships on Friday at Silverlake Park.

The No. 1 ranked Aztecs finished with a team score of 40 while Mesa Community College took first place with 35 points.

Sophomore Kallen McCracken (Mountain Ridge HS) was the top finisher in the 8K race as he claimed the runner up spot with a time of 25:47.47. Fellow sophomore Jose Hernandez (Rio Rico HS) closed it out in fourth place with a time of 26:16.76. Freshman Micah Peynado (Cibola HS) took fifth place at 26:16.98. McCracken, Jose Hernandez and Peynado all earned First Team All-Region recognition.

Freshman Lucas Williams (Mica Mountain HS) finished in 14th place at 27:09.27 and freshman Dylan Johnson (Monument Valley HS) was behind him in 15th place with a time of 27:21.32. Williams and Johnson earned Second Team All-Region honors.

“We had gone into this meet resting two of our top five scorers this season to allow an opportunity for 6-9 runners on the team to represent themselves and Pima at a championship race,” coach Jon Harmon said. “They all stepped up and kept it close, narrowly losing to Mesa by five points. This gives us loads of confidence when we race again in two weeks at nationals with our full squad.”

The Aztecs will compete at the NJCAA Division I National Championships on Saturday, Nov. 14 held at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, AL.
