(Glendale, AZ)  The Pima Community College volleyball team (9-7, 3-3 in ACCAC) faced a tough road test on Friday at Glendale Community College (9-2, 6-0) in an ACCAC conference matchup.

The Aztecs took a 2-1 advantage but couldn’t hold off the No. 19 ranked Gauchos as they fell in five sets (25-20, 22-25, 20-25, 26-24, 15-8).

Freshman Victoria Page’s kill put Pima on the board in the tiebreaker, but the Gauchos scored four straight to take the lead. A service error and an out of play call cut the deficit to two points at 7-5 but Glendale scored six straight points to put it at 13-5. The Aztecs cut it to 13-8 but that’s as close as they would get.

The score was close in the opening set. Sophomore Breeze Schelter’s ace tied it at 19-19, but the Gauchos scored six of the final seven points to take a 1-0 lead.

The Aztecs took an 11-4 lead to start off the second set, but the Gauchos went on a 13-3 run as Pima trailed 17-14. The Aztecs came right back as sophomore Alexis Hutchens (Salpointe Catholic HS) helped spark four straight points as Pima reclaimed the lead at 18-17. Tied at 22-22, Page’s kill and sophomore Addison Gilvin’s (Sahuarita HS) ace helped Pima tie the match at 1-1.

Freshman Ansley Snyder (Canyon del Oro HS) had two aces as the Aztecs scored the first six points of the fourth set. They held the advantage throughout the set. Up 20-16, Page had two blocks and a kill while freshman Skylar Westburg’s kill helped set up set point as the Aztecs took a 2-1 advantage.

The Aztecs clinged to a 15-13 lead in the fourth set, but the Gauchos scored seven of the next eight points to retake a 20-16 lead. Down 24-20, the Aztecs turned to Page, who scored four straight points on her own with three kills and a block to tie it at 24-24. Glendale got the final two points to tie the match at 2-2.

Page led the way with 13 kills to go with four blocks while Hutchens finished the match with 12 kills and four blocks.

Sophomore Alexandra Jacome (Canyon del Oro HS) posted 21 assists and four aces. Snyder had nine digs and five aces. Freshman Alexis Ferbeyre (Pusch Ridge Christian) closed it out with 19 digs.

The Aztecs get into the second half of ACCAC conference play this Wednesday at South Mountain Community College. The match is set to start at 7:00 p.m. The Aztecs earned a straight set win over the Cougars on Sept. 4 at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.
