The Aztecs defeated the Bears in four sets (25-23, 25-18, 19-25, 25-11) for their fifth straight win. They are winners of seven of their last eight matches. The Aztecs swept the head-to-head meetings with Phoenix College this season, winning in straight sets on Sept. 23 at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.
The Aztecs trailed 12-7 in the first set but scored six of the next seven points to tie the game at 13-13. Pima again trailed 21-19, but scored four straight. Freshman Leah Stoneking’s (Catalina Foothills HS) ace sealed it as they took a 1-0 lead.
The Aztecs found themselves trailing 6-4 early in the second set but went on a 10-3 run that was capped off by freshman Estelle Fetsis’s (Pusch Ridge Christian) ace and freshman Skylar Westburg’s kill to put the Aztecs up 14-9. Pima led the rest of the way as Jacome’s ace gave them their biggest lead at 24-16. Fetsis’s kill put Pima up 2-0.
The Aztecs held a 14-12 lead in the third set but got outscored 13-5 as the Bears halted Pima’s momentum for a straight set win.
The Aztecs recovered and took control in the fourth set. Up 5-3, they scored eight straight points as sophomore Alexis Hutchens (Salpointe Catholic HS) had three kills during that stretch, which included giving the Aztecs their first double digit lead at 13-3. Leading 20-10, freshman Alexis Ferbeyre (Pusch Ridge Christian) had two straight aces as the Aztecs scored five of the final six points to close it out.
