Men’s Cross Country takes second place in tiebreaker over Arizona State at Dave Murray Invitational

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s cross country team opened the 2026 season on Friday as part of the Dave Murray Invitational held at Silverlake Park. It was hosted by the University of Arizona.

The No. 15 ranked Aztecs finished tied for second place in the final standings with 62 points, but owned the tiebreaker over Arizona State University, who also finished with 62 points. The University of Arizona took first place with 15 points and Glendale Community College was fourth with 115 points.

Freshman Lucas Williams’ (Mica Mountain HS) finish earned 18 points while sophomore Jose Hernandez(Rio Rico HS) earned 19 points. ASU runner Ryan Lish’s finish earned him 20 points to seal the tiebreaker for Pima.

Freshman Caius Lastra (Cibola HS) was the top finisher for the Aztecs as he took seventh place out of 38 competitors in the 6K race (3.73 miles) with a time of 18 minutes, 14.1 seconds.

Sophomore Kallen McCracken (Mountain Ridge HS) closed out the race in 10th place with a time of 18:19.0 while freshman Joseph Moreno (Tucson Magnet HS) took 16th place at 18:28.2. McCracken earned nine points towards Pima’s team score, and Moreno earned 14 team points.

Freshman Brandon Campbell crossed the finish line in 18th place with a time clocked at 18:47.9 (15 team points). Sophomore Micah Peynado (Cibola HS) was 21st at 19:06.2 (17 team points).

The Aztecs will compete at the Southern Showcase Invitational held at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, AL on Friday, Sept. 18.
