Tyra Starkey takes home All-American honors in Pole Vault after first day of NJCAA Outdoor Nationals

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s track & field team competed in the first day of the NJCAA Division I National Championships on Thursday at New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, NM.

The Aztecs sit tied for 22nd place with one point.

Freshman Tyra Starkey (Casteel HS) took eighth place in the Pole Vault with a mark of 3.31 meters (10-feet, 10.25-inches) as she earned one team point and NJCAA All-American status. Starkey finished in 11th place at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships.

Other Pima finishes after the first day of the NJCAA Division I National Championships:

Angela Vasquez (Valley Union HS)10th place in Javelin 37.03 meters (121-feet, 6-inches)

Morgan Mosley – 17th place in Hammer Throw, 45.00 meters (147-8)

Trisha Stine (Red Mountain HS)20th place in Long Jump, 5.42 meters (17-9.50)

Cayla Jones (Cienega HS)22nd place in Long Jump, 5.27 meters (17-3.50)

The Aztecs are back in action for the second day of the NJCAA Division I National Championships on Friday. Events begin at 9:00 a.m. (MDT).
