(San Diego, CA)  After opening the game with eight of the contest’s first nine goals, Sun Devil Lacrosse (8-8, 3-1 Big 12) never looked back in the 15-8 win against San Diego State (2-12, 0-4 Big 12) to pick up the third Big 12 victory of the season. With the win and Cincinnati’s loss on Saturday, ASU clinched a spot in the Big 12 Tournament.

Senior attacker Lydia Oldknow led with a game-high five goals and seven points in the win at Aztec Field, meanwhile, draw specialist Anna Viglione netted her first goal of the season on her only shot of the year.

The Sun Devils forced 15 Aztec turnovers and held them to just eight goals, which was the third time this season that the Sun Devil defense had not given up double-digit scoring.

How it happened

The Sun Devils scored the first six goals of the contest in a 10-minute span to open with a 6-0 lead. The quarter ended with one score from each team, and the ASU lead was 7-1 after one frame.

ASU scored just 12 seconds into the second quarter to push the lead to 8-1, but the Aztecs mounted a four-goal run in the final 12 minutes of the second quarter to pull within three goals at halftime, as the score was 8-5.

The home team scored first in the third, and the ASU lead was narrow at just two goals, 8-6. The Sun Devils stopped the bleeding with a goal from Ava Whitt with 10:22 left in the quarter, and the lead was pushed back to three. ASU outscored SDSU 2-1 to close out the frame – after a pair of goals from Oldknow – and the score was 11-7 after three quarters of work.

In the fourth quarter, ASU allowed just one Aztecs goal before a four-goal run by the visitors ended the game, with ASU holding on to win 15-8.

ASU held the Aztecs one goal shy of their average goals-per-game mark.
