(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College baseball team (21-20, 13-15 in ACCAC) played an ACCAC conference doubleheader on the road at Phoenix College on Saturday.
The Aztecs had a rally fall short in the first game, but dominated on offense to take control and win the second game.
Sophomore Leon Cereceres finished the day 4-for-8 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman Adriel Figueroa-Brito had six hits on the day as he went 6-for-8 with two RBIs and two runs. Sophomore Owen Wade (Pinnacle HS) was 4-for-7 with two RBIs and two runs. Sophomore Jose Grivalva (Sunnyside HS) took the loss in relief in the first game and sophomore Kai Fitak grabbed the win in the second game. Freshman Hayden Green (Sabino HS) picked up a save in his appearance.
Game 1: Phoenix College Bears 8, Pima Aztecs 7
The Aztecs were able to tie the game, but the Bears took the lead back in the 6th inning and held off Pima’s rally in the 7th.
Down 6-1, the Aztecs scored five runs in the 6th inning. Freshman Cooper Kruk (Catalina Foothills HS) hit a two-run homer to left field to score sophomore Jackson Glueck as the Aztecs trailed 6-5. Wade hit an RBI double to drive in pinch runner Aciel Guillen (Salpointe Catholic HS) to tie the game.
The Bears scored two runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to retake the lead.
Cereceres hit a lead-off single in the 7th inning and scored off of Figueroa-Brito’s sacrifice-fly RBI. The Aztecs stranded two runners on base as freshman Juan Hernandez (Tucson Magnet HS) struck out to end the game.
Cereceres drew a bases loaded walk in the 4th and had an RBI triple in the 6th inning as he finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Kruk went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored while Figueroa-Brito was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Wade finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Grijalva took the loss as he pitched one inning, giving up two runs (two earned) on three hits with one strikeout.

Game 2: Pima Aztecs 11, Phoenix College Bears 0 (F/7)
After four scoreless innings, the Aztecs scored one in the 5th inning, three in the 6th inning and seven runs in the 7th to pick up the run rule victory.
Guillen led off the 5th inning with a double and scored on a groundout by sophomore Max Leyva (Tucson Magnet HS).
Sophomore Matt MacDonald put the Aztecs up 3-0 in the 6th inning with a two-run home run to right field scoring Wade. Leyva hit an RBI single to score Hernandez to cap the inning.
Cereceres came through again in the 7th inning with a three-run RBI double to bring in Guillen, Hernandez and Leyva to make it 10-0. Cereceres was driven home on Figueroa-Brito’s RBI single. Wade, sophomore Mike Jones (Canyon del Oro HS) and Leyva each had RBI hits in the inning.
Cereceres finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a run while Leyva went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run. Figueroa-Brito closed out the game, going 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Wade finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs. MacDonald went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Guillen and Hernandez each scored two runs.
Fitak pitched four scoreless innings and got the win as he gave up four hits with two strikeouts and two walks on 66 pitches. Green got the save as he pitched three innings, giving up two hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

The Aztecs will host Glendale Community College on Tuesday in an ACCAC conference doubleheader at the West Campus Aztec Field. First pitch is at 12:00 p.m.
