#10 Sand Devils split day one of the Death Volley Invitational

(Baton Rouge, LA)  No. 10 Sun Devil Beach Volleyball split its duals at the Death Volley Invitational on Friday, winning over Georgia State 4-1 and falling to No. 4 Texas.

Arizona State (12-4) is 6-4 overall against ranked opponents this year. Under head coach Kristen Glattfelder, ASU has 24 ranked wins in her three seasons and remains undefeated against unranked teams.

Senior Arden Besecker got within of 50 career wins, going 1-1 with sophomore Zoë Taylor on Friday on court two, moving them to 13-3 on the year.

Juniors Kristin Gilmour and Olivia McElroy remain one win and three wins away from the 50-win milestone, respectively.

Game one: No. 10 ASU 4, Georgia State 1 /// Final Box

The Sun Devils took four first sets, and three of the five pairs won their matches in two sets. No. 5 Kendall Whitmarsh and McElroy went to a third set after dropping the second, ultimately winning the final set 15-12. No. 1 Samaya Morin and Ava Kirunchyk secured the win over the Panthers (9-9) in straight sets (21-17, 21-12).

Game two: No. 4 Texas 5, No. 10 ASU 0 /// Final Box

Texas (12-4) handed the Sun Devils their fourth loss of the year. Nevertheless, ASU put up a good effort, with three out of the five courts going to a third set. The Longhorns swept the Sun Devils, their second loss by way of a sweep this season.

The Sand Devils will continue the Death Volley Invitational on Saturday, facing No. 6 Florida State at 12:15 p.m. EDT/9:15 a.m. MST and closing out against the host team No. 12 LSU at 7 p.m. EDT/4 p.m. MST.
