(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College baseball team (3-0) was back out at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field on Saturday as it hosted a single game against the College of Southern Idaho (0-3).
The No. 21 ranked Aztecs held off a rally by the Golden Eagles to earn a 2-1 victory.
Sophomore Max Leyva (Tucson Magnet HS) drew a walk to open the 3rd inning. Sophomore Ramon Martinez moved him over to second base after a single and fellow sophomore Leon Cereceres sacrificed Leyva over to third. Freshman Aciel Guillen (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to score him and put Pima on the board.
Freshman Cooper Kruk (Catalina Foothills HS) got things going with a lead-off double in the 4th inning. Freshman Juan Hernandez (Tucson Magnet HS) knocked a single out to center field to put Kruk at third base. Sophomore Mike Jones (Canyon del Oro HS) hit a fielder’s choice to score Kruk and make it 2-0.
The Golden Eagles countered in the 7th inning with a solo home run. They left nine runners on base for the game, which included two in the 7th inning and two in the 9th.
Kruk finished the game 2 for 4 with a run scored while Hernandez also went 2 for 4. The Aztecs had five hits for the game.
Sophomore Cam Grenert (Horizon HS) picked up the win after he pitched five innings, giving up one hit with six strikeouts and three walks on 79 pitches. Freshman Adriel Figueroa-Brito got his first save as he pitched the final one-third of the 9th inning as he got the final batter to flyout to left field.
The Aztecs will complete their four-game series with the Golden Eagles on Sunday when they play a single game at the West Campus Aztec Field. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
