Aztecs Women’s Basketball holds Phoenix College scoreless in overtime to move to 14-4

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (14-4, 6-2 in ACCAC) picked up a gritty win on Saturday as it hosted Phoenix College at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The No. 12 ranked Aztecs lost their double-digit lead but outscored the Bears 9-0 in overtime for a 74-65 win. Both teams came into the game with identical 5-2 records in ACCAC conference play fighting for second place.

The Aztecs forced four straight turnovers (five total) as the Bears went 0-for-6 from the field in the extra period. Sophomore Melicia Nelson (Window Rock HS) scored four points in overtime.

The Bears (8-9, 5-3) took a 65-62 lead with 1:36 left in regulation but Nelson helped force overtime as she converted on a three-point play to tie it up.

The Aztecs trailed 20-17 in the early minutes of the second quarter but went on to outscore Phoenix College 17-2 to take a 34-22 advantage. Pima outscored Phoenix 17-9 in the second stanza to go up 34-25 at halftime.

Phoenix College started the third quarter scoring eight of the first 10 points, cutting Pima’s lead to 36-33. The Aztecs held on to their lead at 49-43 heading into the fourth quarter. There were seven ties and seven lead changes in the game.

Sophomore Kiley Sours-Miller (Dream City Christian) scored a team-high 20 points as she went 8 for 10 from the field and 4 for 4 from the free throw line.

Freshman Reigne Waugh posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds to go with four assists.

Sophomore Ahdiayh Chee (Dobson HS) was a flawless 3-for-3 from the field, 3-for-3 from three-point range and 2-for-2 from the foul line as she score nine of her 11 points in the second half.

Nelson fell short of a triple-double as she closed it out with nine points, 11 rebounds, nine assists, four steals and two blocks.

Freshman Lucy Fisher (Mesquite HS) posted seven points, seven rebounds and three blocks while freshman Nevaeh Urenda (Flowing Wells HS) added eight points off the bench.

The Aztecs shot 48.1 percent from the field (26-for-54).

The Aztecs will hit the road for the first time since Dec. 17 when they play at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
