(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s soccer team (5-1-4, 5-0-3 in ACCAC) was back in action at the West Campus Aztec Field on Saturday as it hosted rival Phoenix College (6-1-3, 6-0-2) in a battle between two NJCAA Division II nationally ranked programs.
The No. 8 ranked Aztecs were forced to rally twice as the game finished in a 2-2 tie with the No. 6 ranked Bears. The teams played to a 1-1 on Sept. 6 in Phoenix.
The Bears struck first with a goal in the 2nd minute by Yaritza Duncan and the Aztecs tied it up eight minutes later when freshman Ava Dagnino (Salpointe Catholic HS) found the back of the net with an assist from sophomore Ashley Martinez (Sunnyside HS).
The Bears reclaimed the lead at 2-1 when Carmen Coronado scored in the 51st minute but the Aztecs had another response when freshman Gabriela Mendoza (Tucson Magnet HS) netted her goal in the 70th minute. Martinez provided her second assist.
The Aztecs finished with 11 shots on goal and the Bears had 12 for the game. Sophomore Brooke Valencia (Sabino HS) closed out the game with 10 saves.
The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday when they host Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Game time is set for 5:45 p.m. The Aztecs won the first meeting with the Coyotes in a 3-0 decision in Chandler on Sept. 9.
