Aztecs Volleyball wins in straight sets over South Mountain CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College volleyball team (6-10, 3-4 in ACCAC) got back into the win column on Wednesday as it hosted South Mountain Community College (1-10, 0-7) in ACCAC conference action at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The Aztecs defeated the Cougars in straight sets (25-22, 25-16, 25-6) snapping a two-match skid. The Aztecs beat the Cougars in straight sets on Sept. 5 in Phoenix.

The Aztecs took their biggest lead of the first set after back-to-back kills from freshman Alexia Hutchens (Salpointe Catholic HS) and sophomore Julia Baird to make it 15-10. Pima led 16-11 but the Cougars rallied off five of the next six points to cut the score to 17-16. Up 20-19, the Aztecs scored three straight points to make it 23-19 and secure the first set.

The score was tied at 4-4 in the early stages of the second set, but Pima rallied off six straight points as Baird had two aces, while sophomore Maggie McReynolds (Mountain View HS) and freshman Addison Gilvin (Sahuarita HS) contributed with kills to make it 10-4. South Mountain cut Pima’s lead to four points at 18-14 but the Aztecs scored another six straight to take control as Gilvin had another pair of kills and a block for a Pima point to make it 24-14. The Aztecs led 2-0.

Hutchens established dominance to begin the third set as she had two aces and a kill as part of Pima’s first six points. The Aztecs took a double digit lead at 13-3 and never relinquished it. Leading 16-4, the Aztecs scored eight straight points to win the match.

Hutchens finished with seven kills, two aces and a block while Gilvin posted seven kills and a block.

Sophomore Kendall Snyder (Canyon del Oro HS) closed out the match with six kills. Baird had five kills and four aces and McReynolds finished with five kills and two aces.

Freshman Alex Jacome (Canyon del Oro HS) had 16 assists and sophomore Julia Ford (Catalina Foothills HS) contributed with eight digs and one ace.

The Aztecs will step away from ACCAC conference play on Saturday when they play at Park University Gilbert VR. The match is set for a 12:00 p.m. start time.
