Aztecs Volleyball wins first set but drops three straight in loss to No. 12 Glendale CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College volleyball team (5-10, 2-4 in ACCAC) returned to the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Friday for an ACCAC conference match against No. 12 ranked Glendale Community College (11-3, 5-1).

The Aztecs got off to a good start after winning the first set, but the Gauchos took three straight games (17-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-18). The Aztecs have lost three of their last four matches.

The Aztecs gave themselves a bit of a cushion after sophomore Kendall Snyder (Canyon del Oro HS) had a kill and freshman Alexia Hutchens (Salpointe Catholic HS) followed with an ace to give Pima an 8-4 lead. Up 12-9, the Aztecs secured five of the next six points to make it 17-10. Sophomore Julia Baird capped off the run with a block at the net. Sophomore Julia Weatherbie (Mountain View HS) had a kill and fellow sophomore Maggie McReynolds (Mountain View HS) put the Aztecs up 1-0 with her ace.

The Aztecs trailed 13-10 in the second set and the Gauchos scored five straight points to increase their lead to 18-10. The Aztecs cut into the deficit with kills from McReynolds and freshman Addison Gilvin (Sahuarita HS). Freshman Julia Ford (Catalina Foothills HS) had an ace on the next point to cut it to 20-15 but lost out on five of the next six points as Glendale tied it at 1-1.

The third set got away from the Aztecs as Glendale scored 12 of the first 15 points. Pima was able to cut the deficitPress  to five on a couple of occasions, but the Gauchos took a double-digit lead at 21-11 and scored the final three points to take a 2-1 advantage in the match.

Pima scored the first three points of the fourth set, but the Gauchos rallied off the next six to take the lead for good. The Aztecs got as close as three points at 19-16 but the Gauchos took advantage of some Pima miscues with three straight points to take the final set.

McReynolds closed out the match with 10 kills and 12 digs while Hutchens finished with eight kills. Baird and Gilvin each posted five kills and three blocks. Ford had three aces.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Wednesday when they take on South Mountain Community College in ACCAC conference action. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
