(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College volleyball team (4-8, 1-2 in ACCAC) got back to ACCAC conference play on Friday as it faced a challenging matchup against No. 24 Scottsdale Community College (5-2), 3-1) at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.
The Aztecs and the Artichokes played a wild first set, but Pima came up short as they lost in straight sets 34-32, 25-19, 25-16.
The first set featured 16 ties and Scottsdale held set point advantage on nine occasions, whereas the Aztecs held set point one time. The Aztecs trailed 22-17 but scored six of the next seven points. Sophomore Julia Baird’s block tied the game at 23-23 to set up the dramatic first set finish.
The Artichokes took control of the second set, scoring the first five of six points. They scored four straight to take a 10-4 advantage as Pima got back-to-back kills from sophomore Ava Harrelson and freshman Alexia Hutchens (Salpointe Catholic HS) to cut the deficit to three points. The Artichokes led 14-10 but scored another four straight to help their cause as they took a 2-0 lead.
The Aztecs fell behind in the early stages of the third set, but sophomore Maggie McReynolds (Mountain View HS) had an ace and a kill while sophomore Julia Weatherbie (Mountain View HS) also had a kill to put Pima up 10-8. Hutchens had another kill to make it 12-11 but that was the last lead that would belong to Pima. The Artichokes scored six straight points to retake the lead at 17-12. The Aztecs scored the next two points to close the gap to 17-14, but Scottsdale responded by securing the four points to help close out the match.
