Aztecs Women’s Soccer rallies but drop season opener at Mohave CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s soccer team (0-1) opened the 2025 regular season on Thursday at Mohave Community college in Bullhead City, AZ.

The No. 5 ranked Aztecs (Division II) fell to the Bighorns (Division I) 3-2.

The Aztecs trailed 2-0 at halftime and the Bighorns added to their lead in the early minutes of the second half. Sophomore Samantha Mendez (Tucson Magnet HS) scored with an assist from freshman Yajaira Cervantes (Tucson Magnet HS) in the 69th minute to put the Aztecs on the scoreboard.

The pair connected again five minutes later only this time Cervantes scored after a cross pass delivered by Mendez in the 74th minute.

Magaly Guzman-Lopez scored two goals for the Bighorns in the 24th and 50th minute. Anela Hoohuli made the score 2-0 with her goal in the 25th minute.

The Aztecs outshot the Bighorns 10-6. Sophomore Brooke Valencia (Sabino HS) got the start to protect the net and finished with two saves. Fellow sophomore Phoebe Knisley (Canyon del Oro HS) played the second half and had one save.

The Aztecs will host their home opener at the West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday when they go up against Yavapai College in non-conference action. Game time is set for 5:45 p.m.
