(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College volleyball team (0-5) played its first match of the season at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Thursday as part of the Third Annual Aztec Classic.
The Aztecs fell in four sets to North Idaho College (25-23, 27-25, 16-25, 25-18). The Aztecs have dropped five straight, all to NJCAA Division I opponents.
The Aztecs led for much of the first set and went up by as much as six points at 15-9. They led 21-18 but the Cardinals scored seven of the final nine points to take the opening game.
The Aztecs and the Cardinals went back and forth in the second set with 13 ties and 10 lead changes. The Aztecs led 23-18 but North Idaho scored six straight points to put Pima down 24-23. The Aztecs were able to tie it up on two Cardinal set-point opportunities but fell in the end to go down 2-0 in the match.
The Aztecs led the entire third set and never trailed by less than four points in the late stages of the game. Freshman Breeze Schelter had four aces as Pima scored five straight points to cut it to a 2-1 deficit.
The Cardinals responded by never trailing in the four set. The Aztecs got as close as four points at 21-17 but North Idaho secured four of the final five points to take the match.
Sophomore Maggie McReynolds (Mountain View HS) finished with a double-double of 17 kills and 12 digs. Fellow sophomore Julia Baird was also in double figures with 11 kills to go with four blocks.
Sophomore Julia Weatherbie (Mountain View HS) closed out the match with 32 assists and two aces while freshman Alex Jacome (Canyon del Oro HS) posted 21 assists. Schelter had four aces.
The Aztecs are back in action for the second day of the Aztec Classic on Friday with two matches. They will play No. 21 ranked Scottsdale Community College at 9:00 a.m. and close out the day against No. 22 ranked Glendale Community College at 6:00 p.m.
