Aztecs Volleyball snaps six-match skid with a five-set thriller over No. 22 Glendale CC

(Glendale, AZ)  The Pima Community College volleyball team (1-6) closed out its portion of the Third Annual Aztec Classic on Friday with two non-conference matches against Scottsdale Community College and Glendale Community College.

Pima Aztecs 3, (22) Glendale Gauchos 2 (25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 9-25, 15-12)

The Aztecs fell behind 11-10 in the final set but freshman Alexia Hutchens (Salpointe Catholic HS) and sophomore Maggie McReynolds (Mountain View HS) were crucial in sparking the comeback.

Hutchens’ kill tied the set at 11-11 but then produced two straight aces to put Pima ahead for good. McReynolds had the final two kills to seal the win and give the Aztecs their first victory of the season.

The Aztecs held a lead for much of the first set but the Gauchos cut it to 22-20 in the later stages. The Aztecs scored the final three points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Aztecs held a 14-9 lead in the second set when freshman Alex Jacome (Canyon del Oro HS) had three straight aces. They led by as much as six points at 19-13, but the Gauchos scored six straight points to tie it. Tied at 23-23, Glendale scored the final two set points to tie the match at 1-1.

The Aztecs trailed 14-11 in the third set but scored seven of the next eight points to take the lead at 18-15. Freshman Addison Gilvin (Sahuarita HS) had a pair of kills to give Pima their biggest lead at 22-17 as Pima went up 2-1 in the match.

The Gauchos scored the first seven points in the four set as the Aztecs managed just nine points in the set to force a tie-breaker.

Sophomore Julia Baird finished the match with a team-high 18 kills to go with six blocks. McReynolds closed it out with 15 kills and 19 digs while Jacome had 38 assists and six aces. Hutchens also posted double figures with 11 kills and freshman Julia Ford (Catalina Foothills HS) added 14 digs.

(21) Scottsdale Artichokes 3, Pima Aztecs 0 (25-17, 27-25, 25-9)

The Aztecs suffered their sixth straight defeat in their morning contest with the Artichokes.

The Aztecs were forced to play catch up in the first set as they fell behind by as much as eight points.

They took the lead in the second set as McReynolds had back-to-back aces to make it 13-7. Up 17-14, Pima saw their lead disintegrate after the Artichokes scored eight of the next 10 points. Scottsdale had two straight aces to take a 22-19 advantage. Down 24-20, the Aztecs rallied off five straight and held set-point at 25-24 but the Artichokes secured the next three points to win it and go up 2-0.

Scottsdale scored eight of the first nine points in the third set and the Aztecs couldn’t catch up as they dropped the set, and the match.

The Aztecs will be off from game play until next Friday, Sept. 5 when they open ACCAC conference play at South Mountain Community College. First volley is set for 7:00 p.m. in Phoenix.
