Thompson surrenders one hit; Zepeda, Martin and Noreiga each have three hits as Softball sweeps Arizona Western to close regular season

(Yuma, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team closed out the regular season on Saturday with some statement wins at Arizona Western College (27-21, 19-13).
The Aztecs swept the Matadors in a matchup between two Region I, Division I Tournament bound teams. Sophomore Camila Zepeda (Tucson Magnet HS) extended her hitting streak to 27 games as she finished the day 3 for 8 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Freshman Alyssa Noriega (Pueblo HS) went 3 for 5 with two RBIs, two runs scored and three walks. Freshman Talia Martin (Mountain View HS) was 3 for 7 with two runs scored and a walk.
Freshmen Jessica Thompson (Tanque Verde HS) and Nevaeah Bracamonte produced strong starts and got the wins on the circle.

Game 1: Pima Aztecs 5, Arizona Western Matadors 1

Thompson retired the first 15 batters and gave up one hit (leadoff triple in the 7th inning) as she pitched a complete-game, giving up one run (one earned) on one hit with nine strikeouts and no walks on 101 pitches.
The Aztecs got on the scoreboard in the 2nd inning when sophomore Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita HS) scored on an error. Freshman Natalya Rivera (Sunnyside HS) made it 2-0 with her RBI single that brought in sophomore Mina Chacon (Tucson Magnet HS).
Zepeda hit a two-run RBI double in the 5th inning scoring Rivera and Martin to make it 4-0.
Noriega capped off Pima’s scoring when she hit an RBI double in the 7th inning to bring around pinch runner Bella Medina (Canyon del Oro HS).
Zepeda finished the game 2 for 4 with two RBIs while Noriega went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a walk. Rivera was also 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Zylinski-Wrobel closed out the game 2 for 3 with a run and Martin went 1 for 3 with a run and a walk.

Game 2: Pima Aztecs 7, Arizona Western Matadors 2

The Aztecs rallied to tie the game in the 4th inning and scored three runs in each the 5th and 7th innings to help seal the sweep.
Freshman Stephany Montoya (Kofa HS) came through with an RBI single to tie it at 1-1scoring Noriega, who drew a two-out walk. She moved to third base after Chacon’s double.

The Aztecs took the lead at 2-1 when Zepeda hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Martin, who doubled with one out. Freshman Jazmyne Waddell (San Manuel HS) went yard with a two-run home run as she drove a ball deep to left field on a 1-0 count to score Zepeda. Pima led 4-1 heading after the 5th inning.

Zepeda hit a one-out single to continue her hitting streak, and with two outs, was driven in by Noriega’s RBI single. Chacon followed with two-run homer of her own as she sent the first pitch over the left field fence.

Chacon finished the game going 2 for 3 with two RBIs, a run scored and a walk. Waddell went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Noriega was 1 for 2 with an RBI, two runs and two walks and Zepeda finished 1 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Martin closed it out going 2 for 4 with a run. Montoya was 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Bracamonte got the win as she pitched six quality innings, giving up two runs (none earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts and two walks on 79 pitches.

The Aztecs will be the No. 2 seed at the Region I, Division I Tournament next Thursday, Friday and Saturday. All games for the double elimination tournament will be held at No. 1 seed Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher.
