(Detroit, MI)  Arizona State lacrosse (6-6, 1-2) dominated both sides of the ball, after an 11-goal first quarter fueled the Sun Devils to a 17-3 win over Detroit Mercy (3-9, 2-1 MAC) on Tuesday morning. The three goals for UDM tied the fewest allowed by ASU in program history. The only other time the Sun Devils allowed three goals was February 24, 2019, in the 11-3 win over Stetson.

The Sun Devils held Detroit Mercy without a shot for the first 19 minutes of the game, while tallying 16 of their own in that span. Junior Goalkeeper Katie Vahle, who started the game and needed just one save to earn the win, picked up the 21st win of her career, breaking the first-place tie with Berkeley Bonneau in the program’s record books.

Graduate defender Zoe Mazur had 10 draw controls after the first quarter alone and finished with a career-high 14 draw controls. The first draw control to go Detroit Mercy’s way was eight minutes into the third quarter.

How it Happened:

Within the first five minutes of the game, ASU had put six goals on the board. In that span, the team had taken nine shots and recorded six draw controls, while holding Detroit Mercy to zeroes in both categories. The first quarter wrapped up with six Sun Devil scorers, five of which had netted two goals apiece: Emma Heenan, Lydia Oldknow, Mina Scott, Teagan Ngand Shannon Urey. ASU led 11-0 after the first frame.

In the second quarter, the Sun Devils added two more goals from Rosie Davis and Urey, who had the first hat trick of the morning. With 5:33 remaining in the quarter, freshman goalkeeper Sara Flobeck replaced Katie Vahle in goal. Flobeck saved a free position shot two minutes later to keep UDM scoreless.

The home team had their first goal in the opening minute of the third quarter. Ng had ASU on the board in the third and was the second Sun Devil to record a hat trick against UDM. The Sun Devils led 14-1 after three.

Senior goalkeeper Flynn Murphy got the nod for ASU in the fourth quarter, and gave up just the second Detroit Mercy goal. Lindsey Dean was the eighth Sun Devil to tally a goal with her score in the fourth quarter and it was a 15-2 game. Kate Mayle followed with a goal of her own and it was 16-2 ASU. Maddie Riley capped off the scoring for the morning and it was a 17-3 win for ASU.
